View Full Version : Stupid question: Is my new Corsair HX520 fried?

Ok, so I was still dealing with taht same gosh darn piece of flowers MSI motherboard, and because the BIOS didn't support my E8400, I had run to a local computer place and bought a 55 dollar celeron LGA775 to just flash the BIOS.

Took out the motherboard, replaced the CPU and CPU cooler (FWIW: OCZ Vendetta2 is a PITA to install, motherboard needs to be removed to put it on OR ake it off) and connected everything. It was late, and I was tired, so I might have miswired the JFP1 connectors.

Saw a spark (yellow, not blue) in the fan of the power supply, and the thing turned off before anything had actually started running.

I turned off the PSU and unplugged it immediately, and began to check absolutely everything. Each and every connection, make sure no shorts to case, etc. After I was well and convinced I hooked everything back together, made sure JFP1 connections (front panel power/reset/etc connections) were set up correctly and hit the power button: Nothing.

Tried another power supply, known to be good, Antec 550. Nothing.

Tried another case: Nothing.

So, I've written off the motherboard, which damn near gave me a heart attack between BIOS USB issues, and this E8400 compatibility thing, and have orderred an ASUS P45 from amazon to replace it. I just want to know if my brand new State-Of-The-Art power supply is busted?

No smoke, yellow spark in the fan, not blue, and neither PSU did anything with either case. I'm cautiously optimistic, but would love to know what you guys think?

Note: I do not own a multimeter and would not trust myself with a powerful power-supply using one to test if I did.

Unhook everything from PSU and try to jump start your PSU (a short with a paper clip between green wire and any black wire from ATX connector).
If it starts it's a good sign. :)

Yellow spark in the fan...

For added info, the "power incoming light" on the motherboard itself still lights up, leading me to believe that the issue was primarily with the front panel connectors and possibly the cheap CPU I put in hoping to update the BIOS.

Might well be wrong, but I'm kinda hoping it's not gone for good.

Probably not. You could jump-start it to see if it will fire-up. Make sure you turn it off immediately if it works.

Have you heard of the motherboard's connectors for the Case's front panel failing before?

It's really annoying me, and I've never heard of anything like this happening before. Unfortunately, I'm at work, so I can't really check from here.

Yes, I've had that happen on an old Intel P3 815 board. Wasn't worth by-passing with a toggle switch to the motherboard so I scrapped it. Not very common but anything can fail.

Ok so on the downside, the Corsair's not jump-starting. On the upside, my old Antec 550 is, so I'm not SOL, I guess...

How good is Corsair about honoring RMAs/Warranties?

First Class from what I hear about their power supplies and memory.
