Hello,
Just when i think i've found a nice cheap deal on a Samsung F1 i found a great shop with these kind of prices (keep in mind these are the cheapest ones in my country :D ) :
WD 1Tb GreenPower - 7200rpm, 16MB cache - 147$
WD 1TB Black FALS, 32MB - 157$
Samsung F1 1TB, 32MB - 157$
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11,32Mb - 175$
WD 1Tb, WD1002FBYS - 190$
Now i need a drive simply for storage so my main concern is decent performance, reliability and i don't want it to be too loud.
I have 2 WD 640GB AALS drives and 2 Samsung 1TB F1's and i love both of them, but now i need to get 2 or more drives and they all go for about the same price... so i don't really know what to get :D
I've kind of discounted the Seagate because it costs a bit more, and the last WD is probably a RE3 right?
ANY advice is welcome :)
Thanx,
Tom

I saw newegg have a seagate 1tb w/ 32mb cash (i think it was the 340 model), for $109, and with a promo code it comes down to $99 but that expires xmas eve and only works if you're subscribed to their newsletter.
Anyway, just thought I'd point that out.
I also plan on getting a 1TB drive soon as my 400gig samsung w/ 8mb cache is almost out of space.
where do you check the price? why the price is too high?
I would go for the Balck edtion if price is around 100-110$

f1 or black. if you are just going to store data on it and not use it for an os then the green power should suffice

Guys, read the post. He lives in Croatia. Ya know, Eastern Europe.
I would go with the black edition WD from your choices.

If it's solely for storage or backup where the daily performance isn't a big issue and you want to save $10 get the WD Greenpower. Otherwise the WD Caviar Black or the Samsung if you like the ones you've already got.

LOL, yep that about sums it up :D
Its more expensive here... and newegg and other kind of web shops are not really an option, i tried it once and it ended up costing me a LOT more (think +15% tax + 20%customs)
So you're all saying either the WD Black or Samsung F1... they're both the same price so that isn't a deciding factor :)
Is the Black any louder or runs any hotter than F1??

If you're really worried about noise and heat, just get the WD Greenpower. It's a tad bit slower than the other drives, but if it's just for storage, then you probably won't notice any difference in speed, and it's designed to be cool and quiet. It looks like it's a little cheaper anyway, which is a bonus.

The GreenPower drives works @5400rpm right? can i assume that because its not focused at high-performance it will be more reliable/durable ??

yeh, i accidentally bought one once. the read and seek times are slower than most drives of the same size. they spin at 5400rpm and do not make any noise at all. not even that noise when it's reading (hissing noise)

Not always. All of them have good a warranty, I have read the black edition WD's perform better than the Samsung.

It's still capable of 60-70MB/sec transfer rates, though, so don't mistake it as being slow... it's just a bit slower compared to the other drives. Really the only thing lacking is seek times, but that's only an issue if you're trying to use it as a boot drive or something.
I've got one of the Samsung EcoGreen drives, also 5400RPM and about equivalent to the WD Greenpower, and it's plenty fast for a storage drive, as well as being inaudible.

WD AALS (Black) = faster then raptor
getting 120mb/s on mine

And what's the difference between the WD 1001FALS and this AALS? a new revision... because the only AALS model i can get is 640GB...

faster is a relative term and when it comes to what makes a system feel faster transfer rates dont matter as much as seeks. The older raptors consistently get beaten by new hdds in transfers but the raptors still kill them in seek speed which make the system feel faster.
get the black, best out of the bunch and 5 year warranty

Okay i've got it down to the Black & Samsung F1.
The only GreenPower i can get is the old 4 platter one, and i'm guessing 4 platters is less reliable than 3 :)
The price of the WD and Samsung is exactly the same, and the shop only gives 3 years warranty for both drives so. I guess i'll go with WD simply because its newer :)

i vote WD black as well so there your decisions is made. j.k. good luck. im looking for a 1tb myself and i think ill be doing the same.
A lot of people recommend WD black. i ordered one and on the way

I'll be going to get 2 of them after new year... i already have 2 1TB Samsung F1's and i'll compare them a bit... the only thing i expect is that WD will be a bit warmer, just like my 640AAKS is... (about 5°C under same cooling)
I have 3x Samsung F1.
My reasons:
- WD Black edition was around $50 more expensive at the time. (yep.)
- storagereview.com's benchmarks have Samsung F1 outperforming all other 1TB drives except the WD Black
- Samsung F1 runs cool compared to all other 7200rpm 1TB drives
Happy Holidays and hope you enjoy your WD Black.

I have a Western Digital Green Drive (WD10EACS), which is supposed to be a 4-platter design. However, to my delight and through a little bit of research, I've come to find that I actually have a 3-platter revision! :D Apparently, all the newer EACS's being released now are utilizing the newer, denser platters so they tend to run cooler and quieter (and subsequently more reliable). I use my drive just for storage for all my software, game patches, movies, and music and it has served me well for these uses. I don't require the drive to be fast, but for what it is, this Green drive is A LOT faster than any of the older PATA drives that got replaced!
For the $100 that I paid for it, this drive has proven to be more than worth it and I highly recommend them, especially for the newer 3-platter revision! I would say only if you require the extra performance would a Black be worth it. However, if you're after quiet and cooler running (and I literally, cannot hear it running at all in my case), the Green fits the bill nicely.
I'm thinking about getting one of these 1TB drives. Right now I'm using 2 older drives. I have a 200 gig and a 250 gig. Would it be worse to have one large drive than two small drives? I'm just using it for storage and have my OS on another drive entirely.

It will be better and faster, get one big drive.:attn::burn:

i personally have 2 x western digital caviar green 1 TB drives in raid 1 in my server and i love them. they offer pretty decent performance from what i can tell. i haven't run any sort of benchmarking as they are mostly for storage of data to be served on my local lan. i purchased my drives at the end of september and i haven't had any problems with them.

The important factor about a hard drive's speed is it's seek time. Raptors spin at 10000RPM, so they can find data faster than a 7200RPM drive can. However, since the original Raptor design is years old, newer 7200s can outperform it in raw transfers.
I can tell you that 2x Raptors in RAID 0 perform a helluva lot faster than any 7200RPM drive, and any 15K drive is TONS faster than 7200 drives.
