Intel... has said that it will not sell any Atom without a 945 chipset or cooperate in the least with nVidia when it comes to Atom.

Well, it looks like Intel is taking a page out of Apple's playbook. And, we know what portion of the market Apple commands.

Unfortunately for Intel, Atom is already thought of as a cheap underpowered [if not low-powered] processor to be considered only for 'netbooks' that are good for only basic web browsing and word processing--or for embedded applications.

Also (unfortunately for Intel), unlike Apple, there are other alternatives to Atom, and if Intel wants to intentionally hobble Atom, that is there prerogative.

All I can figure, is that Intel must have a huge glut of these 945 chipsets. If you recall, the 945 chipset was at the heart of the whole "Vista Capable" fiasco.

Of course, hobbling Atom may be intentional as Intel doesn't want Atom cannibalizing sales of their 'real' processors.

Not surprising, if you look at it financially from Intel's PoV it would be devastating. Less Centrino 2 sales, less chipset sales, notebooks essentially become netbooks in terms of what the average consumer uses a laptop for.

Nvidia also knows it would be hard to go with VIA because their CPU's can't run windows.

Intel says it won't try to kill Ion. - http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=13786

Intel claims will will allow OEMs to chose an Atom with an Intel chipset or the Atom CPU alone

Few would say that Intel and NVIDIA are bosom buddies. The two firms are battling it out for one of the most lucrative markets in the computer industry -- the graphics market.

It wasn't so long ago that NVIDIA was able to leverage the improved performance of its new 9400M GPU to oust Intel as the graphics provider inside the new MacBook computers. NVIDIA boasted shortly thereafter that it would use the 9400 series GPU to grab 30% of the integrated graphic market, a market traditionally dominated by Intel.
NVIDIA recently unveiled one of the major components of its plan to grab market share in the form of its Ion platform. Ion is aimed directly at the burgeoning netbook market and integrates an Intel Atom CPU with an NVIDIA 9400 series GPU.

Since the Ion platform was unveiled, some rumors suggested that Intel would try to kill NVIDIA's netbook platform in an effort to prevent losing market share in the netbook realm to big green's 9400 GPU as it did in Apple's new MacBook line.

An unnamed Intel spokesman has come out and said that Intel will not try to kill the Ion platform. According to the spokesman, Intel has been offering the Atom CPU alone or with its 945 chipset. Engadget quotes the unnamed NVIDIA source saying, "There is nothing preventing vendors from using [NVIDIA's] Ion platform; [Intel] sells Atom as a standalone processor, or as a package with chipset."

However, there is nothing preventing Intel from offering significant discounts to OEMs who use the Atom CPU bundled with its 945 that make the Ion platform much less appealing.

This is great news! Finally a reason to ditch my eee pc for something that actually offers a performance upgrade! Damn youtube almost kills the thing.

Here is a bit more about Intel's efforts to NOT cannibalize their Core2 sales:

Another great reason to love Intel! They may make fast processors, but their business ethics are something else :)

huh???

which VIA cpu cant run windows?

"VIA Processors certified as a basis for a Windows Vista Capable PC:
All VIA processors (of at least 800MHz)"

Uhh, it's a public corporation. They are legally obligated to put profits ahead of ethics. They'll get sued if they don't.

Publicly TRADED corporation.. It's a private corporation, owned by shareholders.

Unlike a privately held corporation, which is a corporation who's stock is not avalable for trade on the market, it's held by a small group, or the company itself.

Sounds like intel is just returning the favor to me.

nVidia tried screwing Intel on the socket 775. Intel is returning the favor, on a much smaller scale (pun intended)

If intel decides intel only on intel chipsets, thats fine with me.

As for profits before ethics...I am pretty sure no company is "legally" obligated to not have ethics.
