I got a copy for christmas, and I'm hoping to start playing on it pretty soon. For those who have spent a significant amount of time in both views, do you find the game lends itself more to one or the other? I could see the combat being 'better' in first person since I've always felt a little weird with third person shooters, but I wouldn't say that 3rd person shooters are bad by any means. At the same time, I generally associate RPGs with 3rd person view points. Since this particular game is both an RPG and a shooter, I'm having trouble deciding which view to start with. I generally find a camera angle or view point that feels comfortable and stick with it from start to finish. Maybe I'm lazy, but I'd rather get into the game than constantly fiddle with it :)

I use 1st person view. it's just easier to manuver around for me that way.

First since the oblivion/fallout 3 engine just doesnt do 3rd person smoothly.

I dont see how you could aim in third person well, so unless your a VATs guy I go 1st

I go with third person. It's actually not hard to aim in that mode.

1st person here. Was never a big fan of 3rd person.

Since I haven't had time to play that much I usually go with the 4th person view... (I look over the shoulder of my buddies playing the game.)

I ran around in 1st most of the time. Unless I was in a subway or something I needed to watch my back. Like in a melee battle where I needed to keep an eye on all the enemies.
There is times going into 3rd person battle is helpful. I found sometimes the back peddle strafe is easier that way.
Cruising around is easier to just keep the gun view. Melee is fun in 3rd person view.

I use first person. I like 3rd person when its isometric views like in the original two but when your as close to your character as in fallout 3 then 1st person is better imo.

One good reason for the first person view. Is seeing/disarming mines is really tough when your not.

This is basically my approach. Years of playing EQ has trained me to play this type of game mostly in 1st person perspective, only switching to 3rd person to keep an eye on enemies in more than one direction, or to watch my back.

3rd while wandering around 1st while fighting

Maybe it's me, but this approach seems backwards

Wandering around is much easier in 1st person IMO.

I prefer first person, especially since the 3rd person animations are total garbage.. I played Oblivion the same way (fancy that lol)

FO3 is definitely one of my fav games of the year ;D

First-person all the way. It's about the immersion for me, it's smarter to keep an eye on your enemies, but I love the OMGWTFBBQ feeling when I spin around and there's a ghoul charging up and knocking me around unexpectedly.

1st for immersion but F'ing to 3rd (hey, it is the F key) when exploring as you need that extra angle to see what might be behind those rocks or when in a building and need to see around a corner.

Not to hijack but - has anyone done a strictly unarmed or melee character (no guns) ?

My current game iteration is sort of a melee sneaky character. I still pull out the .308. So I can do the sneaky thing. So no, I am not pure melee.

How's that playing out wolf? That's one of 2 concepts I've been thinking of for my first play through.

Sorry it took so long to reply to the last question directed to me.

It is a tough way to go about it. Since a lot of things use long ranged weapons. With ant and ghouls it is not so bad. Sooper Muties it is tough for one. Let alone dealing with two or more. It is a lot of stims to say the least, going that route. :D Fun though kicking some major touche with a ripper though.
Melee makes the game that much harder. Not dealing with ammo is fun, but takes a lot of melee skill and sneak. Way slower going for distances with a lot of baddies around.

One way to see if you like melee. Is to do the Super Mart level.

Awesome, thanks. I'll keep that in mind. Now I just have to get some time to get playing... :(

Keep in mind. Playing a melee character is about strength and agility. Learning how to let the prey come to you is rather interesting. Pop out of cover and take em out. Since you just cannot rush into a combat shotty and expect to live. Your going to suffer in other areas, going the melee route. Like science and other fun things you might need.

One thing I found out. Hit fast and hit often. If you stop. The prey will take you out. So slow melee weapons are not very good. Though it may hit rally hard. Strafe is very important to a melee character. I feel like I am playing Punch Out sometimes.

3rd while wandering around 1st while fighting

This is also how I play. I feel like I can see more of what is going on when I'm in 3rd person, but I can't aim very well in it.

Mostly 1st person but every now and again I use 3rd.

Of topic question here. How and where do you get the keys for the doors? I can't find any of them anywhere. The key to the underworld tree cave system I couldn't find so I just burned the tree man instead of shooting his heart out.

Also couldnt' find the key to the bomb room in the Constantine ICBM underground complex.

Help a poor old guy?

Ok cool. I might stick with a little more conventional character for the first time through.
