I have noticed when my computer boots it say something like 384meg of mem. I have 512 megs. 2 x 256 sticks of crucial. Can half of a stick be bad and it still works? I have cleaned the socket and reseated it a few times and it still does it?

It's possible one side is bad since it's double-sided. Have you tried it in different slots or by itself too?

thats interesting. when i did my system i started with 256 mb crucial. and it showed in my bios as 256 mb but in sandra and in 3dmark i showed 255. so i bought more ram.
another stick of crucial.
posted i had 512mb in bios.
sandra and 3dmark show 510mb
after some fiddling i moved second stick to 3rd slot.
now reads 512mb@bios
511mb@sandra +3dmark
i myself would try it in another board.
i wouldnt write it off yet as i think the board may not just recognise it fully.
probbly wrong but who knows?

Like Jon said, one side (or "bank" can go bad.) What you can do is look in Sandra and see how many banks of RAM are being reported. Also, you could disable the windows splash screen, and then after your POST you will see a box that tells about your processor, IDE devices, video, and also which banks have RAM. Or you could just send it back to crucial and get some new stuff :)

I had a 256MB stick that once "decided" to become 128MB ...of course, the GlobalWin WBK38 HS I dropped on it that dislodged one of the DRAMS may have had something to do with it. :D Heh, I sent it back and got a replacement anyway. Gotta love the "lifetime warranty."
