Hey, sorry for the newbie question, I am a bit new to building rigs and rigerously trying to become a computer guru like most of you here;) but anyways... I have a amd athlon xp 1.5ghz, and I need some suggestions for cooling... what HSF should I get for it? Noise is not an issue, whatever would cool it the best is my pick:) TIA!

Best air cooling = Swiftech MCX462 and Alpha 8045, in that order. If your board does not support the bolt in type coolers like these I would suggest an SK6 or a Glacier 2.

Millenium Glaciator2 is a high performer with a low cost.

Hi Soyo Boy, welcome to the Forum,
For me the bests Air Coolers are:

- Millennium Glaciator II (quiet)
- ThermalRight Sk6 with Delta38Cfm fan, or better a Delta50Cfm (60x60x35mm) very noisy @12v, 7v mod suggested! ;)
- Swiftech MC462A or MCX462
- Alpha Pal8045

but for the last two HeatSinks you have to check the Mobo compatibility, sometimes there isn't enough room around the Socket to fit properly, take a look here (http://www.micforg.co.jp/mb_inf_pal8045e.html) for more info about the Alpha.

Take a look on the Home page too, where you can found an interesting HeatSink Comparison Rankings (http://www.overclockers.com/articles373/).

I hope it helps you ;)

Dont forget the Swiftech MCXC 370 which beat most all of the above mentioned except it's big brother the MCX462...the 370 is a little cheaper........

Well ...the standard sizes for sure (mcxc370, sk6) not sure about the big ones AlphaPal8045 or MC 462(a) ...the pic isnt closeup enough to see the mb holes but probably will work

swiftech 462 does a great job of cooling but is a pain too remove without motherboard tray

Hot off of Alpha's supported mobo list!
Dragon+ = Yes
SY-K7V Dragon = No

I would definitely listen to The Doors on his choices! The Millennium Glaciator II is 2 points better than the SK-6 and is 12-30dba quieter. If you can find a place that sells them, and isn't out of stock, get one! If not, go here: http://www.svcompucycle.com/alpalheaton.html.

HOOT found this and posted it on one of the other threads. The price is unbeatable (trust me, I checked on 17 different sites just tonight and this is the best price!). You can even choose which fan you want to go with it. The choice of AS could be good, but is it AS or AS II? This is probably what I'm am going to get here real soon because I already have a "Delta screamer" and want something QUIETER! It really up to you and how much $$ you've got. You want the best, buy The Swiftech MCX462 for $65-$73. Just don't forget the Arctic Silver II!

PS- I will welcome you to the boards as well! :)

Question to all :

Which would be the better buy (price not being a factor)?

A. Thermal Take Volcano 6Cu

or

B. Alpha Pal8045

Trying to find out which would give me the best cooling for my XP 1800 until I get my water-cooled system built. Thanks! :D -Edit- Both will fit my ABIT KG7-RAID, already checked ;)

Well, the only suggestions possible are up into the others posts,
at this point the best way is to ask directly with another post specifiyng Mobo & HS and wait for the reply of someone with the same set, considering that the Alpha Compatibility list isn't very reliable like dreadlord79 said.

I have an Alpha pal 8045, It's great...
Almost didn't fit on my IwillKK266+ :P
I was holdin my breath when I was screwin it down, didn't look like it was guna fit at first. The corner of it toches the chip set fan on the mobo...

i still say Glaciator 2, but if you have room get the Alpha with a low noise 80mm fan on it.
