After successfully compiling my new rig (case, athlon 1600, shuttle ak31). I delved into the realm of overclocking.

Right now I'm on a retail hsf :p but still getting reasonable temps (43 idle, 45-46 load).

I'm running at 142x10.5, which is meager I know, but I gotta learn to walk before I run a marathon :)

Anyway, as most of you know my mobo won't go past 1.85 volts, so in the future going to have to volt mod it (even though I don't have a clue how to do this at the moment) to get my speed higher.

I guess there's no real point in this post except that I'm happy to be part of what seems like a secret society, lol.

Good job :)
Going slow is smart.

Welcome to the addiction. If you have questions about the volt mod just do a search for it. Here!!! (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44195&perpage=30&pagenumber=1)
If you have anymore questions just PM Doctor. Good luck:beer:

Congrats and welcome the the forums!

From what I've gathered, a volt mod may not help you so much, yet at least. A good Heatsink will drop your temps and help you to get a higher stable FSB. Also lapping said quality heatsink (sanding the base with wet sand paper until it has a mirror finish) would help even more.

I run my XP 1600+ at 147 or 148 FSB most of the time, and +.075 or +.1 vcore.

Doing a volt mod will let your vcore go higher and should improve stability, but it will also add heat. Ideally you want to stay in the low 40's range. So a HSF and some Arctic silver 2 paste would be the first way to improve your overclock. But what you've got running now looks good.

Unlocking the processor and volt modding would be the next steps. Look in the AMD Motherboards> Shuttle AMD boards section and you'll find a post about the AK31's voltage mod. But I strongly recommend getting better cooling for CPU and/or case b4 taking your vcore any higher.

Have you considered OC'ing your video card? Just as fun as OC'ing a processor. You could do a low level overclock without having to buy any extra cooling parts, and $20 for ramsinks and maybe a crystal orb would let you get a pretty good video card overclock. Get a prog called 3dmark2001 from madonion.com to run video benchmarks.

Keep posting and we'll all try to give you some advice if you need it.

Well, the volt mod I probably would be holding off until at least I got a new hsf fan for sure. I've been lurking the forums for quite some time, and have read alot of posts :D

I've already overclocked my geforce 2 mx 400 (gotta get me a ati 8500 someday... *sigh*) quite a bit.

Running 3dmark2001 has been like my hobby for the past few months, and by upgrading my processor/mobo I've risen my score from 1400 to 2500. With some more tweaking and throwing in the video card overclock I've hit 2900 so far.

I think I'm happy right now, as I can play all my games with full detail and no slowdown.

I'll definitely be seeing what the limits of my setup are, as I'm very curious as to how my ram will hold up (2100 ddr, but I can't remember the name of it :p, definitely generic of some kind).
