Hi new to forum but looks pretty good so hoping someone could help as I don`t know much about computers.
Just bought an excalibur Geforce2 MX400 64mb for my system

Tiny P4
1500mhz
256 PC133 RAM

I know I might be limiting my self but its all I had the money for.
THe problem is I am only getting scores of about 3000 on madonion 3dmark 2000 at the default settings. Tryed seting card to 4X anti-initalising but made games crap and shudder. any ideas worried my system has only 2x capablitys any ideas THank

Wilkommen in technogeek land.

I think you may have some misconceptions about anti-aliasing.
GF2s can only do 2x2 sampling, which is effectively quadrupling the amount of work to do per frame. NVidia claim their cards can cope with that, but the reality is that any anti-aliasing at all will cripple frame rates on an MX400, except on low-res.

Things we must know to help:

1) What sort of score were you expecting? It does sound low though... are you sure you don't mean 3Dmark 2001?
2) What drivers are you using?
3) Is Vsync enabled?
4) How many pretty icons are there in the system tray?

Besides what moonunit suggest you might want to make a sig with the rest of your system specs it will help everyone now and any future questionsyou might have. Take a look through the forums at others sig 's and do something along the same lines.

Not really sure what I expected but I am using 2000, first test is a helicopter thing. Just compared with other people at there wb site seems a bit low expected about 5000 at least.

I down loaded the latest drivers from nvidia and also tryed the one which came with the card not much difference in score,

and nothng really in the tray joystick about it really,

Do you think I should re-install windows or is there any thing to look for in the bios

Any further help would be great oh yer and thinks for the help up to now

It would help to know what you have for hardware.
Really need more info.

there's a setting in the advanced portion of your display properties; it would need to be disabled in this case... sounds like a setting issue to me, probably vsync.

I have turn off vsync and turned down the PCI memory and have increased the frame rates at max detail from 15.5 to 29.6 and the score is now 3869, but I`ve lost the ability to do the 64mb texture test and it is a 64mb card(whats that about).

Is this score any good, still think its abit low

what details would you like about my system

You sound like a newbie (not meant as insult, we were all newbies) so I suggest an overclock/tweak utility like PowerStrip. This will let you configure your card for more speed/less pretty or less speed/more pretty very simply. Then after you peruse the forums for a while, you can go in and tweak your individual settings. I can't think of a site to get powerstrip from off the top of my head, but you could probably find it on www.download.com

how did u remove the video card drivers and re-installed it gavdrich? you know the proper way to do it use to be with a program called detonator destroyer, it will remove files that the normal installation wouldnt.
if you want objective help you need to do the following:
enter your bios and write down all the settings you find for the chip configuration at first;
then open your video properties advanced tab and write down all the settings for d3d, ogl and so.

post a reply with the settings you found out.
the score youre getting is too low, i think it should be a bit higher than 5800 using the default benchmark. two things, r u sure your using the default one? and, you talked about pci compatibility mode, is your vid card a pci version?

if you have the option to format your system as u suggested and reinstall everything again it would be cool, but only after you solve this problem. if we find out the problem you might want to try a fresh installation, perhaps another better os, what you think?

Really **** me off Starting to worry that tinys put a **** motherboard in and thats my problem or the card I bought is just ****. but Thank for you help any way.

x CAS latency {3)
x precharge delay [6]
x Ras# to CAS# delay [3]
x RAS precharge [3]
DRAM integrity non-ecc
Delayed transaction [enabled]
AGP apiture (MB) [128]

OPL properties:

use up to [5mb] system memory for textures in PCI mode

D3d settings

did u install your mainboards chipset drivers?
what chipset is your motherboard based on?

all the settings you related seem to be ok to me. one thing or another id recommend you to change but nothing would slow down the graphics so much. what can do this is the lack of the proper chipset drivers, gart and stuff. if you havent installed them try looking for in the website of the manufacter.

Actually now that i think about it, this does sound like a mobo driver issue! Definately check that out, because usually when someone gets scores that are ok, but not nearly what they should be, that is the problem. Especially if it is a Via-based mobo.

gavdrich

Right going to try this but don`t know which drivers to use
my motherboard is a microstar MS-6534
but thats about all I know any body know if this is a via-based card or what drivers I should use went to manufacture web-site but couldn`t find anything specific to my motherboard

Also one more thing going wrong sometimes when I run 3Dmark2001 it just beeps at me and says E-failed to intialise 3dcard not enough memory.

we'll try to solve the drivers one at first.
dont u have the mobos manual anymore? you should find the chipset in there. but if you havent, what is that mobos brand? let me look for the drivers at the website for u, post a link in a reply.

THanks alot you have all being great help. I got the drivers off the manufactures website the mobo is a micro-star MS-6534 but this didn`t help. So I took the computer back to where I got the graphics card and they alos said I should be getting scores of about 6000 on 3dmark 2000, so there having a look at it. Will tell you how it goes, The only thing left I could think of was there is something wrong with the card. 3dmark 2001 never detected any local card memory, in msinfo32 the adapter type was never shown, I`ve down loaded drivers for the Graphics card, the chip set and some new bios, I reinstalled windows ME, and played with the graphics card properties, and I got no difference in score, the only improvment I had was when I turned off the the memory the card was allowed to use when in PCI mode, which increased the frame rate on the game demos by 2 times, but only got my 2000 mark up to 3800 which is still very low, and also doing this didn`t let me play any games which made the whole thing pretty useless. So now I just preying there is something wrong with the card!!!!!
So thanks for all ya help As I said I will tell you have it goes

I reinstalled windows ME

There's your problem right there! :p

Naw, not even that os could dock your scores THAT much. But FYI, nobody should use WinME, nobody. Win98se/WinXP/Win2000 is the way to go. Im a fan of XP personally....

The guy at the shop said not sure whats wrong yet not checked the processer or mobo, but what he did notice is that in the bios there is a bus setting clock speed or something like that, which goes from 8x up to 23x and at the moment its set at 8x do you think this could have anything to do with the problem. The mobo is a micro-star ms-6534 a intel board I think and the processer is a pentium 4. the ahrd drives fine and so is the memory and the graphics card its self.

gavdrich

I installed all the lastest drivers and increase my mobo speed and now I have scores of 5800 on 3dmark 2000, and 2800 on 2001. I think these are about right. I think my mobo may be a bit slow or maybe this is just the best you can get out of a mx400. so anyway thanks for the help.

so until the next problem

so what was it?

gavdrich
01-28-02, 08:59 AM
Thats the worring thing I think it was my mobo speed I`ve increased it though the bios to a fast yet still stable speed. Not overclocked. To tell you the truth not really sure what setting was that I increase the man at the shop suggested it, but it seemed to work. Then with a bit of tweaking suggested by you lot to begin with, v-sync off ect and new drivers just started working better. as I said from 3200 3dmark2000 to 5800, and from an unstable didn`t run most times 2020 3dmark2001 to a consisitant 2700-2800. so what ever it was it seems better. just got some more new drivers from the intel site one called advanced performance software and the other installtion drivers but don`t know weather or no to use them!!!!! might mess things up again.
