I'm about to buy a new HD I was wondering if I would notice any diff between 5400 and 7200RPM?
I do ALOT of file sharing and sometimes when i'm movin/downloadin a lot of files and I try load IE or any other progs, the HD will ack like its havin a hard time tryin to keep up, and it would take a while to load, was wonderin if 7200rpm would help that? I was thinkin that could also be 98se crap mem management :P
I was thinkin about gettin ether IBM, WD, or MAXTOR, prob. 40GB
Just wonderin if 7200rpm is worth the extra $$?
Yes, things will load much faster.
Out of WD, Maxtor and IBM brands.
I would get the IBM GXP60 Series or something....

I'm sold solely on the IBM 60GXP's, the 40gb models are only about $90 bucks and they're some of the fastest ata100 drives...plus from what I hear they're very reliable...surely I have not had any trouble with the 5 or 6 I've used so far here at work...

Yes, the 7200rpm hd's are the ones to get. If your worried about cost, then go for a Western Digital, as it doesn't cost as much as the IBM. But if you want the best performance, then go for the IBM. ( nothing wrong with WD but IBM are just that little bit better in performance ).

Now I just have to pick a brand...
All are around the same price for the 40GB 7200RPM
$86 for WD and Maxtor,
$89 for IBM
$87 for Seagate
hmmm which one...
IBM or Seagate.
If you get IBM get the GXP60 series the GXP70's have related issues and there is or was a lawsuit appointed to IBM because lots of their drives have failed(The GXP70's) and I don't know if they fixed it in their recent but its best not to take the risk and save yourself some frustration!

If you're running a file server or something of the like, you should be thinking about SCSI and not IDE. Getting a RAID setup is something you should look into as well.

Any more I probably wouldn't think of SCSI because of the cost. Definitly a raid setup though.
I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm drive -very fast. I love it.

I'm stickin with IDE, SCSI is a lil too much $ for me :P
I think Im guna go with the IBM 40GB 7200rpm 60GPX - OEM
Still has a 3 Year Manufacturer Warranty too =)
I guess I'll get it from Newegg...

The 7200 RPM is a big different.
But from what u post I'm not sure if the whole slowness is due to your HD only.
Do u have a lot of program running in the background? if you do try disable most of it and you'll see the different.
also the RAM I see that you have 512MB RAM but I'm not sure if it optimize. I have first I have 5400 RPM HD and then get 7200. Speed is different. Then I upgrade from 128MB RAM to 1024MB RAM now big big different. Last reformat and reinstall software then make sure it not running in background. I have a good speed.
I don't know if u play Counter-Strike.
I use to the the very last one to load a new map. But now I the second or thrid person to get in the new map and i'm only on 56K.

I don't have any programs running in the back ground. You hit alt-ctrl-del on my comp all u'll see is explorer and system tray...
When I boot up there are no system tray icons, Theres like 3 things checked in msconfig =)
So it's not programs slowin me down...
It could be mem leaks/holes in the programs I'm usin, the HD or windows it self.
My VM is set to 512MB, I'm guna try lowering that and see if it helps, anyone know any prefred settings?
This slowness only happens after a while of the comp doing the same for a long time, like d/ling for a few hours, or after burnin some CD's...
But if I'm gaming and stuff, or watchin movies, surfing, it's fine
It's like it gets cloged up or something...

It sounds like your on the right track but I'm wondering if your going the wrong way. It sounds like the swap file is getting ful so the computer will hang whating for it move data around.
I've got my VM setting at 3 gig, not that it ever uses it but I'm sure that when burning a cd some 600 meg is being used. Three gig is still considerable less then windows wants to assign it.
I would say crank it up around a gig and see if it helps and if you've got that much free.
make sure IDE ATA is enabled as is 32 bit transfer. Try SMART as well. They might help.
