Well I've got a Maxtor ATA100 7200rpm drive connected to the promise ATA100 controller on my A7V mobo.

I originally installed WinXP on my system by having one partition in FAT32 for win98 and another partition in NTFS for winXP. But when I benchmarked the drive, the performance was that of a DMA33 drive. So I figured it was the partition setup screwing things up. Now I have a single NTFS partition with WinXP on it. The performance is still crappy. In Sandra I only score 11000 as compared to the 23000 I used to score when only running win98.

I have the latest Promise driver for XP also. And one other thing comes to mind here. The controller appears in device manager as a SCSI controller and my harddrive as a SCSI drive. Could this be the problem?

I had problems with disk speed in XP, cleared it up by not installing any mobo drivers, and letting widows pick drivers for everything else except my video and sound. Maybe you should see if windows recognizes those things and has it's own drivers for them. I have had very bad luck with ata cards and try to stay away from them. Also maybe make sure you didn't download the scsi drivers? stupid question but hey :D

Not sure why you get poor performance, it might have something to do with the driver or maybe irq sharing.

It's normal for your controller and hard drives to show up as scsi devices.

Well I'm running the driver which XP installed right now anyway. Although I did install the via 4 in 1's which for some reason only installs the IDE drivers. Everything seems to be limited off to DMA 33 performance. I'm at a loss here. I even switched out cables.

Same drive and same problem. Mine went from about 22000 to 10500 with XP. I let windows install the drivers and tested it then I updated the via 4 in 1's no improvment.

hmmm....could it be a problem with the Maxtor drive? I sure hope not. I really like Maxtor.

Hugo, what motherboard do you have? And which ATA controller?
