System specs in sig. just recently noticed random lock ups. Its really unpredictable when it happens and sometimes theres wierd noises coming from my speakers when it happens. Could it be my power supply? My system was running rock solid prior to the upgrade. Clocks speeds and voltage did not change. The only things that have changed are my HD, GTX 280, and Ram (upgraded from 2GB to 4GB). Now I'm actually currently running 4 HDs (150GB raptor, 74GB raptor, WD 1TB, and a Seagate 250GB), Do you think I'm overloading my PSU?

Thanks.

Have you tested the ram or put a multimeter on the power supply?

No, I'll try putting my old ram back in when I get home. I don't have a multimeter. Do you think my PSU should be able to handle all of my hardware?

the psu is more then enough for that setup, but you might have a bad unit. need more testing of the pc to make sure though...

Thanks guys. Looks like its the memory. I swapped the 2 gigs (2x1) back in and it hasn't locked up.

I suggest you run memtest anyways

I find it strange that a PSU would cause a lockup instead of a crash/reboot. Can someone enlighten me as to why this may be the case?

A bad power supply can cause all sorts of weird issues but it seems like we've narrowed this problem down to ram

Trap,

Agree. A failing power supply or failed RAM have many of the same symptoms. For those that have not been through this, it can be confusing and frustrating and it's important to remain calm and patient, test the RAM properly and check power supply voltages with a DMM along with a visual inspection of the capcitors. Ususally one or the other will prove faulty.

Are your voltages stable? I also have this power supply, but I have heard they can be very finiky. I would suggest you RMA it anyways. Im about to do the same for mine, because its making a high pitched noise
