Sweet! I can't wait for this puppy to grace my lap :).
Whats amazing is how far netbooks have come. I had the EEE 701 and that was a great lappy, I can only imagine how awesome this one is going to be!
I got the AOA150-1567 which features 1.5gb of ram and a 160gb hard drive, all for $350 canadian. Plus, I love Acer. They're support is just fantastic!
Anyone else order up one of these puppies?
My nephew has just gone through two of these so far. It seems a bit off when it comes to the build quality. The first one was the 8 gb version that was as slow as a turtle. He then got a 160 gb, but the hard drive could not be read during boot up. I know it was probably just a bad connection with the wiring between the board and the hard drive, but I didn't want to void the warranty.

Should be a nice netbook, let us know what you think. I just ordered a dell mini 9, should be here thursday so I'm excited to say the least.

Yeah, when netbooks first came out I wasn't all that impressed but ever since I started using one, I don't know how I ever lived without one. I'm waiting for three things before I consider a netbook perfect: 1. the nVidia Ion chipset so that I can play HD movies with zero problems 2. dual core Atoms in netbooks 3. consumer priced SSDs that don't have performance issues and don't require tweaks (I'm on the OCZ Core V2 now but with the SteadyState fix which can get annoying every now and then).
Netbooks with 1 should be out later this year and 3 should be taken care of, hopefully, by OCZ's new Vertex SSDs coming out by the end of this month. 2 is something I have no idea about... but two out of three still makes me a really happy camper.
I'm really excited for the future of netbooks.

Interesting little toy. Would be nice if they had actually made a door for the HDD/RAM upgrades without a full dismantle required.
The Atheros card will need power saving disabled if you're using Windows to function properly on battery.
You could look at a 9 cell battery for long use. You can get them in either 7200mAh or 7800mAh.
The 10" model should be out soon too, that will have the proper bottom doors for access to HDD/RAM + 1 other thing i'm not sure of as of yet. It should have bluetooth as well. No secondary SDHC slot also. And bottom buttons for the touchpad. Hopefully it is still synaptics, and it should have gesture support as well. Acer did use Elantech at one point in their Aspire line, maybe they are using it again?

You will love ur mini 9... i got a base 4gb ssd 512mb of ram version ... poped an nlite install of xp on it and in total i use 1.2gb with fully updated fully functional xp sp3 and office (word excell ppt) itunes and aim installed! thing is friggin quick!!!!
Ima probably buy a 2gb ram stick for 20 bucks here from newegg or frys in the next coupla days... not worth paying 75 bucks for it from dell.
Best thing of all was i got the mini 9 for 100 bucks... dell deal if you buy a studio 15incher get a mini 9 for 100 bucks... friend was buying a studio 15 and asked if i wanted the mini... i was like HELL YA!
The acer netbook is nice, but im not gonna lie i used one for a day, and the placement of the left and right click buttons SUCKS, the keyboard is quite cramped as compared to the mini 9, and build quality is meh alright.

Sweet, I'm excited to try it out. I have an n-lite build all ready to go so that'll be the first thing I do (after I throw in my 1gb stick of ram because its a 512mb one). I got the 8gb one cause it wasnt much more. I think out the door after tax and shipping it was 218 from dell outlet. I want to put a bigger SSD in there, but I guess they are only compatible with runcore ones??

mini pci-e ones should be compatible, just seems like the runcores are the best performing option now.

ya id wait awhile... CES had a coupla companies that showed upgrade options for the size of the mini pci-e ssd's found in the mini 9.
I'm about to pull the trigger on the aspire one 3G black edition that has built in HSDPA 7.2 160GB HDD etc...
Hope it turns out to be a good buy :D
Throwing Linux on it even though it comes with XP home... Windows can go into virtualbox for when I need it.
How hard is it to upgrade the memory? It uses DDR2 sodimm, right?

you gotta disassemble the whole laptop pretty much to upgrade ram. You can only put in a single 1GB DDR2 SODIMM.
I heard that you won't void the warranty by taking it apart though. The disassembling of the unit isn't that hard but there are a ton of screws. The max RAM for the unit is only 1.5 gb, 512 mb is soldered directly on the motherboard.

It should support a 2 gig module

thats why i really like the mini 9... upgrade ram... no prob 2 screws and your at the ram.
and i think max is 2gb for the atom chipset. 945GSM?

It doesn't. Physically, you can put it in but it won't POST with it. Max is 1.5GB since 512MB is soldered on and the chipset itself only supports up to 2GB. No way to disable the onboard either.

OH ok so 1gb is max... cus i dont think there are 1.5gb modules.

No. The single available slot only supports 1 gb. That 1 gb + the onboard 512 mb = 1.5 gb.

i kno.. im saying 1gb is max you can put in the slot cus i dont think theres such thing as a 1.5gb module.
I've had an Asus EEE 1000 for a few months now and I have to say that it is still the most impressive netbook that I have seen. Most netbooks are based thus far on very similar platforms, I think it's the small things that make a difference. Acer has a decent offer but they cut corners on things like the battery which is 3-cell. The screen is also 8.9" and yet the weight is the same as the EEE 1000's 10" screen, 6-cell battery setup. You may have 1.5GB of ram versus my stock 1GB but for $20 I was able to get a 2GB module with a heat spreader on it. Asus is also one of very few who offer a solid state option which is magnificent! Is a non state of the art 40gb SSD a huge accomplishment? Not really but at least it's solid state, and I can forgive its shortcomings in speed due to the fact that it is quick enough for the type of tasks that a netbook handles. The two easiest components to break imo are the screen and the HDD. I am very happy that I eliminated the shock vulnerability and ensured a higher level of data integrity with SSD. As for the price comparison, you can find the 1000 on sale frequently for $400.
I'm not trying to ruin your fun but I seem to have a much stronger preference than others and attention to detail in netbooks than others. I'm curious as to why you went with Acer this time instead of Asus since you mentioned you had a 701.

you can buy the model with 6 cell battery, they offer a 3 cell for those who feel it is not worth the weight difference plus it was an availability thing at the time. Now, it's still a matter of size/weight and availibility still of the 6 cell battery.
It is not the same weight as the 1000H/HA. There's about 0.5lb difference (3.2lb vs 2.7lb). Yes, not significant but still could be as that is the difference between the 3 and 6 cell aspire one. The 1000 is not 2.7lb either.
It's not a true 40GB SSD, I believe it is a split SSD setup (8gb + 32GB).

- The model he specified is listed with a 3-cell.
- The 1000 is specifically listed as 2.94 lbs.
- True or not it's 40GB worth of space, it is indeed split but there is no reason that I can see that would make this is a hindrance. It actually helps to have the OS related files on the smaller integrated chip and your media or whatever you would need that is large on the 32GB mini pci-e ssd. It's just like a partition that you can't remove, but why do you really need to anyway.

True but you make it sound like it is not available with a 6 cell battery, which it is.
Ok, but if you want to compare what he bought vs what you bought in terms of weight, then you are still 700g over. Not much, you are thinking, but that's over 30% heavier.
Yes, it is 40GB but only 8GB of it is actually of a decent speed. The other 32GB is not as fast. May not be important to you but imagine buying a hard drive where only the first little bit of it was fast and the rest was slow. Think of it as a 7200rpm drive for the first 8gb and then a 4200rpm for the remainder.
The 10" screen has the same resolution, so it's not a huge jump. Had it been 1280x800, there would be a real big reason to go to it.
While in the USA you may be able to get the 1000 for that price, it is over $150 CAN more before tax than what Cheator paid for his AAO. Add in tax, and it is almost $200 more. That's substantial if you consider he only paid $350 CAN total for what he has now.
Acer is coming out with their 10" model next month which is pretty close to the same as the Asus EEE 1000H series, it should have BT, 6 cell battery, upgradable to 2GB without full dismantle of the system (as well as access to HDD), they fixed the touchpad buttons by putting them under the touchpad, all for $399 USD. That and I find the US keyboard layout on the Acer is better than the Asus (full right shift button).
Yes, there are plus'es to the Asus also (hot keys, gesture touchpad, dolby sound room). Acer is coming late to the game with their 10" so you expect them to make a good product.

Well I got my new baby, and she is sweet. Windows 7 is running on it right now and I will use Wubi to put on Ubuntu as well. Windows 7 is fantastic, and it runs REAL fast on it. Its amazing what this little thing can do...

how do you like the windows 7 beta? I was thinking about running it on the mini...
did wubi work for you? I always mess up the whole windows install as well when trying to use it. But haven't tried it in a while

Wubi always works, its never broken windows for me.
Im really interested in the new hp mini 1000's... sexy as heeeeelll but any netbook i buy is gonna get hacked and modded into a slate, so dont wanna spend too much =)
considering this aspire one for a car pc project since its cheapp *under $300 cdn now* and has a fantastic screen.
do these use 1.8 or 2.5" drives?

the ones that come with a HDD like 120 or 160GB use 2.5" drives.
The SDD versions only have space for a 1.8" drive upgrade AFAIK

Yeah, so if you're looking for space, i would recommend something with a real hard drive in it.
space isnt really an issue for the car, ill just stick a usb hdd in there that i can remove and take to the house to put crap on.
I was thinking of making a slate that could dock to the car out of this unit, but the motherboard arrangement makes that impossible with the space i have to work with. but oh well. at $275 right now, ill just buy two heh.
