View Full Version : Concerned about drive clicking noise

So I got a new Seagate 1TB hard drive for xmas which is now home to all my media. I'm concerned about the drive because it makes some clicking noises when starting up and randomly during access. Noises that I would associate with a dying hard drive.

If I watch a TV show at least a handful of times so far I've noticed dropped frames and slight stuttering for a very brief period of time. Concurrently I also hear the drive clicking a bit.

I don't notice this problem with listening to music off the drive as far as I can tell. And I'm quite sure its not the show itself.

Is there a good way to test that the drive might be dying? or if there are bad sectors on it? I'd prefer not to spend the 4 hours it took to format the drive in the first place to reformat it if I don't have to (or it wouldn't fix anything).

Thanks!

Run a checkdisk from Windows or Seatools diagnostic on the drive

If diagnostics come back clean, try replacing the power cable.

Ran checkdisk and it came back clean. I'll have to dl Seatools when I get home.

Its running on a 3 link SATA power cable that runs my primary drive and secondary linux drive. Would you think that just by dumb luck one random connector is bad?

Never know, should just rule it out as the problem.

Isn't there a firmware update for Seagate 1TB drives or is it only for the 1.5TB models?

Ouch I just made a thread about a similar issue with a Seagate 1TB drive.
