View Full Version : HD 4830 DVD Quality - Interlacing Problems
So I've been having trouble getting my system to properly playback video (Dvds in particular). No matter what DVD I attempt to play I always get jagged edges/lines, visible horizontal interlacing lines, and what I can only describe as faint vertical lines across the entire movie screen (only where the video is playing). It is as if there is a piece of dirty glass over top of the video, smearing everything! Static images like my desktop, web surfing, picture viewing all work great, but Video playback, especially from a DVD looks horrible compared to my XP system in my sig (same monitor).
I built this system only a few weeks ago and not once has it ran properly; cheeks on people look smeared and blended, motion is very blurry, and nothing is crisp or clean.
I have tried uninstalling the 8.12s and reinstalling them (having also run driversweeper), I have tried installing 8.11s (but they don't seem to support the HD4830), I've even installed Windows 7 on a separate partition with the latest ATI beta drivers, and I am still having these problems.
I have played around with the catalyst control centre, changing settings, turning on de-interlacing, setting different AA and AF filters and sample rates, and nothing I do seems to get the image even close to what it was on my XP machine. The only positive noticeable difference was seen with PowerDVD 7 when I turned on software de-interlacing, though the quality still did not come close to that of my XP machine.
Has anyone else with these drivers and the HD4830 experienced this or know how to fix it? It is bugging me that I cannot watch any DVD properly!

UPDATE!
Still no resolution.
I have tried to rip the DVD to my computer as an image file (.iso), mount it using Virtual CloneDrive and then play it back using Windows Media Player 11 to rule out my Blu-ray drive as the issue, and it still shows up all blended, blurry, and interlaced.
I then proceeded to use CloneDVDmobile to convert this into a divx .avi file (3 passes), and though the picture quality did improve noticeably, it is still no where near what it was on my XP build.
Since I do not have any spare PCI-E cards lying around, I cannot swap out to see if this is a video card problem or a driver issue (as I'm using the only drivers available for this card). But, my gut is telling me that this is related to either the ATI Drivers, the video card itself or faulty codecs (which I have since uninstalled and reinstalled)
Does anyone have any ideas on how I should proceed next? I will try to install a few different codec packs to see if that might help the issue and I will report back.

honestly, it sounds like a cable, or an overheating gpu, the later being the most likely imo.

remove the k lite codec pack, and try media player classic. it has a loadof built in filters, and there are some external ones you can try (coreAVC is a good one, especially for HD content).
make sure the codec packs have been properly removed, players like vlc have good built in decoders and such. i haven't played a dvd in ages (bluray FTW), but try and see.
Windows 7 hasn't had any codec packs installed so I went ahead and downloaded Media Player Classic. Still with the same issues. I then proceeded to install VLC on Windows 7, but still not any better.
I have taken a few screenshots of my issue, so hopefully that will help isolate the problem. (pictures linked in the first post)
Also, I have gotten my hands on a few .mkv files (720p) and they seem to play back flawlessly. I have reseated my cables (this cable was previously working on my XP machine, so I know that it is good) and made sure that my video card has adequate cooling, though in an Antec 900 with only one HD, that really shouldn't be an issue (minus any possible heatsink unseatment).

ATi CCC -> Avivo Video -> Basic Quality
make sure "Use automatic deinterlacing" is checked and see if that helps
Does not help :( [it has been on the entire time, I tried disabling it, and re-enabling it, and nothing works.]
In that same menu in the video preview, the part above the flag keeps on fragmenting/interlacing/jittering/bob-ing as the flag moves. Dunno if that might imply anything..

when I use automatic the flag waving is perfect... if you disable it and move the slider all the way to the right does it make any difference in the flag waving?
No difference at all, but there is a difference (diminishing) when I move the slider to the left.

then it either has to be a driver or codec issue. do you really need all those codecs installed on your system? On mine I have ffdshow, mpc-hc and power dvd (for blu-ray) but with the latest ffdshow and mpc-hc you can decode blu-ray (hardware acclerated too) and I might just get rid of power dvd.
there is no reason to have k-lite and vlc either, ffdshow and mpc-hc can decode everything you throw at it.
I started off with just klite playback w/ mpc and Powerdvd7 for my Blu-ray. Everything else I have added on while trying to fix my issue. I also have a clean install of Windows 7 which I have just installed VLC and MPC. No codec packs. Still doesnt' work. My guess right now is that it's either the 8.12 ATI drivers, or something went wrong in the new ffdshow codec (which I will try reverting to an older version soon).
UPDATE!
I've tried installing older ATI drivers. 8.10, but they didn't recognize the HD4830, so I proceeded to download drivers off of Sapphire's website (which are bascially ATI 8.12s). Still the problem persisted.
Next, I uninstalled Klite and installed Vista Codec pack.. That didn't work.. And neither did the newest klite pack released a few days ago.
The pictures seem to bob at times (very slight movements, but VERY noticeable). When on a black screen I notice what looks like interference waves that you get when you are getting feedback or when bunny ears on your tv aren't catching the right signal.. I'm not sure what that means either..
I have also uploaded another screenshot from my Friends DVD. My problem is very evident there.
Same problem here! Games and desktop look fine but video play back bites!

To me, it looks like a codec issue. But if you keep having this on different installations, I'm clueless. Have you tried reinstalling XP again to see if that is giving you problems now?
What happens when you throw on the 8.11? Do they just not work, because they can't detect your card? Maybe try 8.10, maybe even directly from Sapphire?
Try the card in a different PC?
It has be baffled as well!
I haven`t tried XP on this computer, but I will give it a shot when I get the chance. Will need to create another boot partition.
As for the drivers, I`ve installed 8.12s (full suite), 8.12 driver only, 8.12 from sapphire, 8.11 & 8.10 (which have not detected my card), all with no success. I wish I had another computer on hand to test out the video card, it would be nice and easy to just RMA the card if that were the case, but my bet is still on the drivers. I`ve sent in an issue to ATI, so they know about it now. Hopefully 9.1s, when they come out, will do better.
I`ll also give gaming a try when I get a chance, but that will involve me investing in a game. *looks to see how much Crysis goes for these days*
I`m at a complete loss here.

I use Haalsplitter, ffdshow, & zoomplayer through WMP11 for standard DVD's. Recently added PowerdvdUltra for Blueray decoding. all play great....well, I still have some issues with BR discs, but aren't we all?
AVS Forums (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=26/) has lots of information on configuring HTPC's, though not as rapid on responses as we're used to here. But for a wealth of knowledge, can't be beat.
So, 9.1's came out! But alas, they did not help the issue. Sapphire tech support concluded that it is a defective video card and they are asking my to pay 35$ for shipping to get it RMA-ed. Dunno how they expect that, when a brand new video card doesn't work from the get go, they expect you to pay to get it sent in and fixed.. It just doesn't seem right to me.
Anyways, I picked up an HD 4650 the other day and put it into my machine, and while this did help with the clarity of the DVDs, there still is motion jitter and interlacing problems!
ATi CCC -> Avivo Video -> Basic Quality
The area around the flag is even more jittery than before!
I was wondering if anyone could take a few seconds clip of their flag moving just so I can compare it to mine. I don't know what it should look like when it's working properly but I want to assume that only the flag is supposed to move.
I don't know what to say.. My P4 computer at home (what is in my sig) is connected via a VGA cable and running XP 32-bit produces a much sharper and clearer picture than my brand new computer does...
Could it possibly be the motherboard that is affecting video image??? I am at a loss at what to trouble shoot next..
UPDATE!
So I got the 4830 exchanged for another one. Still the same problem. I'm going to take a guess that it is NOT the video card. Could it possibly be the Blu-ray drive or the motherboard?

Ok, your problem is not about interlacing-deinterlacing.
Interlace is this :
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/db/Interlacingani2.gif
Full black horizontal lines in the whole frame.
And the flag you talk about is **** quality on me too, and it doesn't indicate anything because any good quality video or dvd plays well on my both machines.
It's like your hardware doesn't kick in to render the frames. Did you try uninstalling everything related to codecs/video and only install a dvd player program and try a dvd ? Especially get rid of anything like avisynth or such.

Hey guys, did you manage to find a solution for this problem? Because I just bought a new Asus Radeon HD 4830 and I have the same problem with my dvd's. They look exactly the same as your pics raven.
My computer:
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200
2GB Ram
I have tried everything I can think of but I just can't get them to look fine. All my other vids like quicktime trailers, 720p mkv files, etc work perfectly but not the dvd's I try.

Load Advanced Catalyst Control Centre - Avivo Video - All settings. Then turn off Edge Enhancement and De-noise in the advanced settings at the bottom.
Does that help?

OMG, that worked for me! DVD's are crystal clear again!
I can't believe how I've missed that setting even though I tried everything I could find there! Plus re-installing drivers, codecs and programs! My only excuse would be that I've been an nVidia fan this far (Geforce 256, Geforce 4400 TI, Geforce 7900GT) and only used their drivers. But the 7900GT broke down so I had to buy a new one and people recommended the ATI so here I am :-)
Thank you so much Neural Net!! You're the best!!

Glad it worked! :) It's certainly well tucked away given what impact it has on video quality!
Wow, this thread lead me to the fix for the vertical lines in DVD playback. I un-checked "Enable dynamic contrast" in the CCC to fix it which is in the same place mentioned above. I'm using CCC 9.9 and it happened with 9.7 and 9.8 as well. Never tried to any other versions since I purchased my 4870x2 when 9.7 was out.
Thank You!

Interesting, i guess my policy of "enable nothing!" is working out for me.
Good to know.

Your information was valuable to me, too, Neural Net!!! Thanks a million!!!
huh.. to my surprise this thread is still kicking.. i should really subscribe to my own threads...
I am glad that everyone got their fix. I ended up noticing that Windows 7's native drivers worked great for me, so I never bothered to update to CCC. Since then, I've updated my system with a new gigabyte UD4P motherboard, Core i5 and an HD 4550, and haven't had any issues since.
