Beware Circuit City closeout deals: No refunds on broken gear (http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/124232;_ylt=AjF2VUxUj8z9XJuXm0xYl.TZn414)

Original post:
My doctor was out today looking for a wireless all in one printer, he went to Best Buy, Sams Club, Walmart and finally popped into Circuit City [To get to the Circuit City info, Skip down to the Yellow Text below]
During this time he called me for help five or six times as there were virtually no clerks or salesmen in each of the stores computer departments. When he finally got help, they were not helpful and pretty rude. ( I could hear them on his phone) I told him finally to just go home and I'll order one and bring it to his house, or he could come here once it's shipped to pick it up. You see he just got in a divorse and the spouse took everything, including the Brighthouse cable modem power cord and the wireless router. She also tool the computer. But taking the cable modem's power cord is just mean. :(
He's a good guy and I feld bad for him, so I had a P4 Dell HTPC sitting around gathering dust so I gave that to him until he gets something better. But the problem hooking it up was not having the cable modem power cord lol. I also gave him a wireless router but I could not finish the job until he got a power cord at Brighthouse. Apparently he's getting that today.
Anyway before he gave up and had me order a wireless printer, I told him to take his Corvette and make a bee line to Circuit City and just look since their closing down soon. On the shelf was a Lexmark $299 wireless all in one printer for $79. I told him to buy it. At the register the cashier said if you wait one day, it'll be 10% less. But if he bought it today they would not pricematch their own price. I told him ignore her and buy it, it's $200 off lol
So anyway, tomorrow, I'll be going to Circuit City to see the deep discount liquidation sale, maybe I'll buy that printer myself, for $7.99 cents less than he paid.

Very unlikely, Usually liquidators raise all the prices to msrp then take 10% off. I am willing to bet that the price will be 269.99 tomorrow.

This. I've read that same tad of info somewhere else that at the start of the liquidation sale everything goes up to full retail, then they start dropping percentages off of that. What that normally means is until you reach at least 40-50% off, you're still gonna be able to find it cheaper online.
so today is the best day to go to circuit city?
There's hardly ever a good day to buy from B&M anymore these days. CC near my house couldn't even match a Steam deal.
more than 50% a printer sounds like a good day to me

You just need to catch the deals before a liquidator takes over. It's not something that happens instantly overnight so there ought to be a little bit of time.
*Maybe I was wrong. This is on the CC website:
Liquidators will start arriving in our 567 stores across the U.S. over the weekend, and closing sales will start as early as Saturday, January 17. Closing sales will run as long as it takes to sell existing inventory, but are expected to wrap up by the end of March. When the liquidation sales are completed, the stores will be closed.
I might still take a trip out there tomorrow.
i went down and there was nothing worth buying the deals were worse than newegg tbh
They had call of duty 4 for $2 off. Doh! What a joke!

It'll probably be 3-4 weeks before things start being a deal again now that the liquidators are taking over. Even then its iffy, when CUSA liquidated I went in there near the end and they were still selling stuff for more than you could get it online in a lot of cases, anything they really had marked down was already snatched up.

That wasn't the case this time as far as I could tell, I got in a hour ago with the last printer for $60 some odd dollars. Didn't even make it in the house before that printer was dibbed by a friend needing a printer. (I didn't need it, but I went to Circuit City anyway to see if there was anything I really could use) There were plenty of good deals, just nothing I needed. They had a few LCD's deals and I'm going back today with a neighbor to help her buy a LCD if they have any left when I go back. (This neighbor is particular, and the reason I didn't buy her one earlier today)
It didn't appear as if they jacked the prices for the liquidation sale like furniture companies do all the time with their crazy sale antics. :)

I've come back from the zoo that is circuit city. Not much there. For reference, they're taking 30% of "accessories". This includes keyboards, mice, cables for anything, TV stands, wall mounts, and the sort. DVD's are 20% off, and everything else in the store is 10% off. Not sure if this is every store, but this is the case at the one I went to in Enfield, CT.

What a BITCH!!! <adds spare modem power cord to shopping list>
I went to a store in MD and their deals were anything but (not that I was expecting big deals on electronics). On top of that, this particular store had big signs up all over inside and on the doors stating "CASH ONLY", despite what CC said would be accepted payment online the store near me was not honoring it.

they might have to get new credit card machines since the old ones would be going to CC, id imagine they'll be taking credit again soon.

I'm bitter sweet about this. Honestly in my area I live in a pretty big area and other than CC we have the dreaded Best Buy. At one time we had CompUSA, BB and CC. Now we are down to BB and no other choice, so I'm sure any deals in my area are gone.
Sure we have a Wal-Mart, but as you all know, WM doesn't carry and computer stuff at all, just the basics.
The fact of the matter is although times are hard, CC brought this on themselves, even when they were on top of their game, I rarely found good deals with them, Just like CompUSA before them.
Anyway, hope you guys find some deals, I plan to check them out in a week or so, I don't expect much the first few days.

Wow. dunno where you guys shop. Around here we have stuff closing down, like KAyBee toys etc, and prices are DIRT cheap.
(toys that were 15 dollars now 1.99 dollars, in fact my sister shops there a ot, they GAVE her extra pieces from dispaly models for stuff she bought....)
EDIT: Walmart does carry computer stuff. Its just 5+ years old and priced higher then current gen stuff (at least every walmart I have been in NJ, PA and WV)

ditto that one... and I work at office depot, and we sell very limited computer parts... like an nvidia 5500 for $80 that says NEW on it and PCI, and a radeon 7000 for the same price that says AGP!!! lmfao... when they hired me for their tech department, I asked if they would let me redo their inventory and pricing for components to something more recent. like within the past 2 years recent... I was shut down, lmao.

I went in and got a 42" Panasonic 42PX80U Plasma for $600. It wasn't a steal of a deal since Dell had it for the same price on Thursday.
I just got it all set up and it's working great. I actually have the same TV in my living room and I need another since my 51" Magnavox projection went out.

The prices are controlled by what ever group is heading out the liquidation. I'm heading to the CC near me tomorrow probably, and I'll report my findings. My GFs brother got the whole guitar hero setup for ps3 new for 42.

This is what I'm expecting as well. When Linen-n-Things did their Canadian bankruptcy sale, the liquidators made all the prices MSRP minus 10% for the first couple weeks. It took them around 6-8 weeks to start getting down to 40-60% off, and then they took it down to 70-90% on the last 2 days before the stores closed permanently. However, as mentioned by Vipersfate, it depends on the liquidator.

Same here but I often drive 60-100mi. to frys or microcenter or go to them when I am visiting my parents.
I knew they would fail ever since I read in the newspaper an article about them firing there employees with the most sales saying that it made it unfair for the other employees.

I remember when CC was just awesome- back in the 80's and early 90's. Then they started to suck. They deserve to go out of business; I am surprised they lasted this long. An absolutely horribly run company. The whole executive team should be blacklisted from the business world. And yes, I could have done a better job. :)
Oh, and I won't get to participate in any sales because I live several hundred miles from the nearest CC now.

That's exactly what they did I was looking for good lcd tv and even with 10% off it was overpriced. So long Circuity City, see you in hell.

I went to, two different stores, and the prices were not at all good. I have been shopping 19-22" LCD monitors and was hoping to get a deal. The monitors I'm shopping are $130-200 online.
The cheapest of the lot was nearly $200 at CC. A disgruntled salesman kind of dropped the hint that prices did go up, and not down.
When I was shopping the Samsung 650 series HDTV, I found it at CC, but they just wouldn't deal on it. So I was going to buy it on Amazon, but decided to try Best Buy. They matched the Amazon price, and got my business.
Thats what killed CC. Their prices were not competitive, and they never lowered them to get a sale. They also were just flat out scamming people with the whole 120hz HDMI cable thing. Telling people they needed to buy a $100+ Monster HDMI cable, when a $3 cable does the same thing. That was company wide, not just a few stores, and it really turned people off, obviously.
My experience: My wife and I got there around 6pm Saturday and the store was pretty well picked through. Went looking for a TV, but all that was left were floor models. No matter how desperate I get, I could not bring myself to buy a floor model.
The only "deal" they had at the time was 10% off PC's, excluding accessories, printers, etc. (none of that was on sale at all).
FWIW, the place was a mess. Cables were laying in the aisles. I saw a receiver hanging half on/off a shelf upside down. Generally the place was a shambles. Oh, sorry, DVD's were 20%, we grabbed a few of those on our way out, but that's all we bought.
All in all, there weren't any deals you couldn't have had on any given day at Newegg or even Amazon. Sure, you could wait for things to cool down and the prices to come down too. By then, I would guess, nothing of any value would be left. I'm surprised a few of you found printers that cheap, that was the 2nd thing I went to look for: all of them were full price.
It was 10% off everything and 20% off DVDs here in hawaii. The prices sucked even with 10% off, but for some reason people were ransacking the place.
I guess they didnt know that 10% off an already overpriced product takes you back to about even with the rest of the retail market. I didnt buy anything.

I can tell already that there won't be any bargains in the Circuit City stores near Detroit, and it will probably hold true for most of the chain. Here's my theory why:
1. CC has been in a financial bind for quite a while now. They already closed hundreds of stores and have had several rounds of layoffs. Obviously they didn't have much money. Combined with the global credit crunch, that means they had very little inventory. The first thing a retailer does when they get into financial trouble is to cut back on inventory. Furthermore, we're still in the post holiday period, a time when retailers run low on inventory for natural reasons. And that means there's not much in each CC store to clear out.
2. With the current consumer sentiment, everyone is jumping at "bargains", even if what they're buying really isn't a "bargain". The CC's near me were absolutely overrun with customers this weekend. That's in stark contrast to every other retailer which has seen their sales decline sharply.
3. The routine with these liquidations is 10-20% off for a week or two, then it goes a little higher (like 20-30%) for a week or two, then a little higher, etc.
By the time the discounts at CC get to be a legitimate bargain, there simply won't be anything worth buying left. Not even floor models.
I'm surprise CC lasted this long. A couple times I did comparison shopping at BB and CC, and Best Buy literally had 10 times more customers on the floor at the same time as Circuit City. You can't pay for lights, heat/AC, and other expenses at 10% the competition's income.

I needed to use up some old CC gift cards so I spent a good hour looking around the store hoping for find a really good deal. Ended up picking up a Xbox 360 Elite since 10% off retail was a lukewarm deal for something like that. Figured something like that wouldn't last to the 15-20% time in two weeks either.
My local store was offering 10% off of the existing prices. I go in there quite often, so I am fairly sure that they didn't jack up the prices before offering 10% off, but those store prices weren't stellar to begin with, and 10% isn't anything to write home about. I ended up buying a few PC games that I had been meaning to get for a while. I'll wait till its near the end to check it out again.

My local store was offering 10% off of the existing prices. I go in there quite often, so I am fairly sure that they didn't jack up the prices before offering 10% offI guess anything is possible but considering the rules are that of the liquidation company that now owns them it's highly unlikely to be an aberration. The only example I can come up with that I know for sure is proof that they do indeed revert to MSRP and provide discount off of it are the JVC Marshmallows. I have never seen them selling for above $19.99 at CC, matter of fact I just bought a pair the week before CC went belly up for that exact price. I went in there last saturday and they are now listed at full MSRP of $24.99 and that price is marked down 10%.

Well keep in mind from what I read there are FOUR companies handling this liquidation (probably split up by geographical area that they serve) and its quite possible the four companies have different policies/methods for handling their liquidation.

In return they end up hiring nothing but high school and college aged kids, on no commission, and no incentive to do anything. They cut out commission not long I think after 2001 & early 2002. I'm shocked they stuck it out for as long as they did.

It's sad to see them close. I worked there for 4 years while in college. I made about $30 an hour on comission sales. After they stopped comission sales they let all the good salesman go because they were only paying about $11 an hour to people who used to make 3x that.
Sadly I prefer to go to BB to buy anything since the stores are laid out better and newer. The prices are usually the same though. Best Buy seems to have more sales though.

We used to do that a CompUSA too. I got a killer set of Acoustic Research speakers that retailed for over $300 (these are a descendant model - http://www.jr.com/acoustic-research/pe/AR_AV570/ ) for less than $75 just because I hid them. I've had the speakers for almost 15 years now and they still sound awesome.
Took a look today. Deals are still crap.
Haha at Kragen the managers used to set all the misc crap in the back for 2-3 months and they would go on clearance for super cheap. DVD players and other weird items for an auto parts store, just misc crap to put on the shelves. I hope that CC gets some decent sales, these prices have been crap.

That's what happened with the FIRST round of Chicago Liquidations.
I picked up Mass Effect and some other game... can't remember.
But that's where it all starts.
Open box stuff should be marked down too. Hope they still have that Denon 7.1 Receiver that was $130... can't really mark up something that's open. That's probably gone now though.

It would be better for all of us if people just shopped a bit. I mean, it takes 5-10 minutes most times to research prices on the web and walk away a much more informed consumer.

I stopped into a CC over the weekend, and had the same experience as most others... the sales just sucked. It was kinda funny, actually, many of the 'discount' tags were placed in front of the original price tags on the shelves, obscuring the original prices. Move the 10% off tag, see that the original price was $10 lower than the 'discounted' price.
There was still a huge crowd of idiots buying stuff, though. Hey, if it works, I can't really fault the company for parting fools from their money. I don't plan on going back, though, at least not until the last days when I might find some last-ditch leftovers.

I spread out my spots so if an employee found something he didnt find all my loot... now its just a waiting game for 60+% off.

I too went back to check out their game selection and ended up getting PURE for $32 and some change, COD3 for $10 and some change, and NFL Tour also for $10 and some change.
But on this stuff the price for the most part isn't dictated by them, it's by the game maker, so that's how I justified it with myself:beer:

I went in to CC the other day with my GF. She saw some guy she knew and said "I didn't know you still worked here." I interjected with "Not for long!" It was funnier in person.
I picked up a Diablo II battle chest for $17, but I was already thinking about it.

I went into CC once a couple weeks ago just to check things out.
They still had a couple laptops hooked up to the web. I brought up everything that I could in comparison to Amazon and Best Buys prices, just for comparisons sake. 8 GB SD cards, a model of HDTV, a camera that the wife wanted, a camcorder that I wanted.
CC prices even with the markdowns are downright obscene. I left.

I stopped in to my local Circuit City today.
Picked up Crysis Warhead for $15, and a Sony BDUX10S blu-ray drive for $75 (It is $160 at Newegg and $90 at Amazon)

just pulled the trigger on an arcade xbox for 139. apparently the other consoles went pretty fast but they still have a ton of xboxes still in stock. i really wanted to pick up a psp too :/
geez I walked into CC, there was so many ppl in that store you could hardly believe we were in a recession.
I wouldn't be surprised if at the last possible second CC cancels it's bankruptcy due to all the $$ they have made off of the deal seekers that are actually getting ripped off.
as soon as the Wii's hit 30% off, they disappeared... all 30 of em :(

Yeah CC already got paid out their pennies on the dollar for the merchandise, Now the liquidators are lining their pockets from having cash on hand to buy the stuff in the first place.

good luck to anyone trying to find anything useful at a good deal and CC. I went there, and the price was surprising high. It's cheaper to get things in BB with sales, than from CC under liquidation. I felt it is a scam for the price they are getting rid of their stuff. Blu-ray movies marked between $30 - 35 and then marked with 30% off. WTF..... I can get it cheaper at tower.com. Their display laptop, 10% off retail.. sigh......

It's really based on luck and what a given store has left in stock. I wouldn't go expecting any crazy deals but there may be some. I got some CDs for ~$6-7 each

If I was buying a $1500 TV I'd be opening stuff, screw what the employees say. Besides from what I can tell they're all (soon to be former :-/) CC employees so I don't think they have any incentive to really care about enforcing some 'don't open the box' rule.

I'd at the very least gently shake the box to determine if the new tv is a pile of glass shards.
You learn something new everyday, today the lesson learned is; In some States you can't do a credit card charge-back if the company is in bankruptcy, you're simply stuck with a dead product with zero recourse.
The manufacturers warranty excludes broken mishandled products, if it was defective, the manufacturer's warranty would rectify the problem, but a HDTV's broken screen isn't the manufacturer's problem, they'll only help you if the customer service person is in a good mood and takes pity on you. Then again the odds of getting a broken high dollar item is slim, but if you're the guy that that goes to Circuit City & buys a $1500 HDTV and find it smashed to bits, well that would truly suck http://smiley.onegreatguy.net/bitch.gif
PS, I bought a new HDTV 2 days ago, I didn't go to Circuit City, then I saw these articles and glad I didn't pop in to see if they had any remaining HDTV deals

The salesman standing next to her said "uh ma'am, you're gonna have to buy that now since you opened it." I politely reminded him that the company for which he was attempting to enforce that rule was going to have him standing in the unemployment line in the coming weeks......he left us alone.

How about this: My local CC sold a guy a "5 Disc DVD Player" for ~$200. He was "shocked" to find out it was a CD player when he got home.
YES, he was an IDIOT, but the point is a manager at CC admitted that the salesperson probably lied to him, but ALL SALES ARE FINAL!
I wish I could get a news clip of this guy.. it was hilarious how shocked he was... just like some fool who lives in a flood zone who is "amazed" that his house (read: trailer) just washed away for the third time in 10 years.

any way circuit city sales are hit and miss, most of the stuff at mine are 50%-60% off and even when they were 40% it wasnt bad. i got my Garmin 265WT for $200 where if i would have gone online and not bought from a scary lookin e-tailer it woulda cost me about $270-$300.
how ever i was in portland yesterday and i hit up circuit city's up there and it was a joke, their mark down were weeks behind the one at home, 20%-30% and that was it but the store was almost empty.
the employees dont care if you open the stuff most of them are talking amongst one another or are on their phones or something, i know a few people at the one here and i just popped em open and they didnt say any thing.
so if you go to Circuit City, open your crap BEFORE you pay for it, and if they say any thing then tell them to get the tape, your not buying any broken sh*t.

CC deserves to go out of business, the executive team was/is utterly and completely clueless. The irony is that the executives who ran the company into the ground will end up with another 7-figure salary somewhere else.
Niku-Sama- I just bought a Nuvi 680 with 1 year of MSN Direct for $178 on eBay. A 265 for $200 is not a good deal, that is a $125 unit today.

So the CC here is supposedly only has 7 days left of being open. It still has some laptops and desktops in it. I wouldnt mind picking up an hp desktop for 50% off or something but 20% off is definitely not good enough. If those comps are still there in 7 days do you think I would be able to offer them something for it? What happens to the stuff after those 7 days?
