View Full Version : Multi-GPU2 plus 2 X WinSMP - what core affinities?

I have several systems running multi-GPU2 clients simultaneously with multi-WinSMP clients. All systems are WinXP (32) systems with Q6600 overclocked CPUs. GPUs are all Nvidia G92 running off of drivers 180.60. Right now, I'm not setting any core affinities or priorities, just running Folding@Home Affinity Changer, which automatically balances the load for WinSMP demands. Affinity Changer works fairly well. I'm just wondering if anyone has a priorities-affinities formula that's proven to work well.

I'm curious about this also, because I hope to replace my single ATI GPU with 2 G92 GPU's soon. My initial thought was to run 1 SMP and 1 GPU on cores 0/1, and run 1 SMP and 1 GPU on cores 2/3. But I don't know whether this is really the best arrangement or not.

It's a non-issue if you only run one SMP client. With Nvidia GPUs, just run drivers 180.60, which puts over 99% of the GPU Folding load on the GPU cores themselves. When you add a second SMP client to the same CPU, that's when balancing is needed.

I think you're already using the best solution for your config... just make sure the GPU2 clients are configured for 'Slightly Higher' priority if using the GUI client, or 'low' core priority if using the console client.

I will recommend that a 2xVMWare/Linux/SMP setup would yield more PPD than the 2xWinSMP setup... and you won't need to use the affinity changer. However, this setup will require more memory than 2xWinSMP... but it looks like your boxen are up to the task. :)
