View Full Version : blew out my power supply running SETI 24/7
I left my PC running SETI for the last 3 days. Well, Today when I got home from work. The PC was not running. I thought oh crap, my CPU is fried. I turn the PC on, nothing, no fans, no lights. I looked at the CPU, looks fine, no burn marks. I then shifted my attention to the PS. I took it out, and plug it to my other PC. Nothing!!! Went to Compusa and Picked up a $80 500 watter, plugs it into the dead PC. Boots up like a champ. I placed an order for an Antec 400 watter. When that comes, I'll return the Compusa unit. I am afraid to let my PC crunch SETI for 24/7 now.
I've got my 10 home machines and many at my work, not to mention our servers running 24/7. Sounds like a dud PS to me. All businesses run servers and other PCs 24/7 without severe PS troubles.
Bummer.

I agree that you may have gotten a bad psu.
The hardest thing you can do to your psu is to turn it off and on.

You were just unfortunate to have a bad PS. Your new PS will most probably give you worry free 24/7 usage for a long time. I use Antec and Fortron Source PS's and they run my servers and workstations 24/7 without any probs - and have been doing so for several years.
Don't worry about running your machine 24/7. Keep on crunching.
Yeah you just got a bad psu. Like others have said - we have dozens of rigs running Seti 24/7 among us and I've personally never had a psu failure. Don't worry about running Seti all the time as long as you have adequate cooling and ventilation.
My psu is a low end sack o' crap that limits my overclocking ability but I can still run SETI 24/7 (with a limited overclock though :() without problems. I've been SETIing with 2 machines 24/7 for several months now. I agree with the others, just bit of bad luck for you.
I run all of mine 24/7, this tends to weed out the inferior power supplies. As TC said, make sure that you have adequate ventilation.
By the way, when did CompUSA start "renting" power supplies? That would really suck if I picked up that one if I bought one from there.

Yeah, it was a cheap 300 watter that came with a cheap case. I know, I feel bad about the Compusa deal. But I was desperate, I had to test out whether I had a bad PSU or something else, I just couldn't wait until the Antec arrives. And I don't want to keep Compusa's unit. This will the last time I pull something like this. If you happen to pick up the one I returned, well, all I can say muhahahahahaaa , sucka. No, I'm just joking. I don't know what to say if you really do. It's not like I'll ruin it or anything. I'll repackage it up real good. You won't even know the diff.

I agree with the above, the time was up on your PS.
All 3 of my home machines, and all 35 at work run 24/7.
I have had 1 power supply go bad in the last 2 years.
Just like anything else electric/electronic, when it decides to quit, it will quit.
Doenst matter how well you did or didnt take care of it, or what it was doing at the time.
you'll probably get charged a restocking fee anyway unless the item is not in stock...i think thats COMPUSA policy
you should have just picked up an Antec tower....it would have cost just a few $$$ more

I have only blew one PSU out of the several...it was a bad unit...this is also the case for your PSU. Running Seti 24X7 doesn't put anymore stress on it.
