Let's try this from another angle... [previous posts in other forums have led me this far]

Is anyone having BSODs in Windows 2000 professional and a running Sound Blaster Live?

I'm crashing in various games and applications (Giants, RTCW, DiabloIILOD, WP, etc) with a BSOD. The error I am getting is as follows:

Stop: 0x000000d1 (0x0000002,0x0000000,0xBFD2AD44)
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Address BFD2AD44 base at BFD2900
Datastop 3a640a36 portcls.sys
Beginning Dump of Physical Memory

My research shows that portcls.sys is a miniport audio driver. Furthermore, I'm told that Sound Blasters have crashing problems in Windows 2000 because the SB Live card whenever accessed tries to "grab" the whole PCI bus for itself. In W2K this is a no-no, for you get either breaks in sound, programs that crash, lock-ups or in your case BSoD. [Thanks to Mpegger for that tip]

Anyone else experiencing BSODs in Windows 2000 and running a SB live?

Thanks!

I suggest a trip to Paul (http://www.viahardware.com/faq/kg7kr7/kg7kr7faq.htm) with this issue on your MoBo+W2K+SBlive!.

I had a problem with the Soundblaster Live in 2000 in that after boot up 2000 hung trying to load the Creative programmes. It did BSOD, but after re installin g 2K it worked fine with the drivers that came with 2K.

I now use XP pro and have no problems

For me the latest (4.32 at the time I was using w2k) via drivers and drivers from creatives site seemed to do the trick.
