OK guys, what's best or possible. GPU folding on a quad ATM and want to add SMP. Will both work on Windows X64 or is a virtual SMP needed? Thanks all.:)

It's my understanding that you will get more PPD running dual VM-SMP, than running regular Windows SMP. It is not that difficult to setup VM-SMP. Read the sticky on VMware & Ubuntu. I don't know whether 2GB of memory is enough or not, because my VM clients use about 800MB each. Maybe someone else can provide more info on this.

You can run the VMs with 512, I haven't seen a huge hit. GPU in X64 is no problem, that I know for sure.

I'm running my VMs with 512mb only but I'm using CLI only for my ubuntu VM's..

2xVMs + GPU2 using v180.60 drivers or higher is working great for me on XP x64. :)

For what it's worth, I usually run my VMs @ 600MB a piece... full Ubuntu/Gnome GUI.

How is your affinity set? If I let a VM use any part of the core that GPU is using, my PPD will go down around 2000PPD on GPU.

Are you using the 180.60 and above drivers? Set VM's priority to low and FahCore_11 to BelowNormal.

Yes. I thought once GPU finished a WU and started another that it reset priority. That misunderstanding could be my issue.

OKay. Two VMs, one using proc 0/1 and the other using 2/3. GPU is set to run only on core 3. Set FAHcore11 to run at "normal" priority, and VM on 2/3 at low priority. Crippled my GPU to 1672 PPD. I dont' know what magical setup some of you guys have, but I have NEVER had any luck running a VM on the same CPU core as I'm running a GPU client.

This is on a GTX280, which we all know is capable of more than 1672 PPD! Set the VMs back to VM1-0/1/2 and VM2-1/2 and PPD for the GPU is back up to 6307 and climbing

LOL, ya'll went way too far here to answer my simple question! Anyways, from what I gathered here and in other threads, I decided to go with GPU and virtual SMP as I did in X86. It's going good now. Thanks.:):beer:

Yeah, what jintatsu said...

VMs 0/1 & 2/3 with "Low" Priority set manually in Task Manager. Then set priority "Slightly Higher" for the GPU client (if using the GUI version).

Here's the [core] section of my client.cfg for the GPU client I'm running along side two VMs, as described. I would guess that "Slightly Higher" yields priority=96.

[core]
priority=96
cpuusage=100
disableassembly=no
checkpoint=30
nocpulock=0

I'm not sure when you are saying you're setting "Normal" priority if you're talking about in the client configuration... or Task Manager. If in Task Manager it won't work since the priority set in the client configuration is thread priority, not process priority... and I believe the options in the console client are [idle/low], so there is no normal.

Okay, I edited the config file for GPU with priority=96, and will set VMs back to 0/1 and 2/3, setting priority for the VMs (in task manager) to low.

PPD prior to change:

GPU - 6307 (@75%)
VM1 - 986 (@32%)
VM2 - 3208 (@70%)

And yes, I absolutely loathe the 5102 WU that I have on VM1. :mad:

Anytime! :beer: That's a nice 1k swing in the positive direction. :) Rock on! :attn: <- b/c I miss WII.
