on dec 23/02 I ran a net speed test and recieved these results...
Download speed 970 kbs...upload 131...ping 132
(this is using PC Pitstop)
today Jan. 17/02 upload speed 909kbs...upload 92 Ping 522
I am using Bell sympatico High speed edition...dedicated service 10/100 ethernet nic. should my ping vary this much with the same site?

do I have ISDN or DSL?

If that site was under heavy load, it's possible. If the route between you and that site has changed since then, it's more than possible. There are many different variables that can cause a ping to fluctuate between you and another site, especially if you have a long route to travel.

If you're using NT, Win2K or XP you may want to try this. Go to Start-->Run-->type in CMD and open a command prompt. Type in TRACERT <IP address or .com name> and then enter. Example:

You can see from the ping results where you might be getting a bad connection.

I'm in your province and the Sympatico provided in Ottawa is basically the same in your area although I don't have Sympatico I ran it at my brothers, sister-in law's house and it was on and off and the bandwidth was horrible.

You should call up their tech support and ask them to run something like a health check could be a bad modem too, or NIC.
Or something else.
