What are you using it for? Divx is a good codec better quality to size ratio than mpeg2.

Moving this to "Other Software". Keep it to the mechanics only and I hope you are encoding home movies.

Going from MPEG1 to MPEG2 won't degrade picture quality, but it won't improve it any either. If your encoding a home video, try to go directly to MPEG2. A couple of key differences: MPEG2 has higher resolution (720x480) and better framerates. But, there is a cost, MPEG2 files are huge and are best suited to be stored on DVDs. MPEG1 files are smaller, less resolution and fit nicely on CDs. For example, an MPEG1 movie on a CD is about 40 minutes or so (maybe more). But, an MPEG2 movie on a CD is 15 to 17 minutes.

Also, MPEG1 will play on most CD-R and home DVD players. MPEG2 is not nearly as compatible and will only play on home DVD players that are specifically compatible with VCDs (Video CDs).
