Hi,
I was trying to hook up our computer's to our Cable hub and got a problem. Upstairs, when we try to go anywhere on the internet it says on the status bar "Detecting proxy settings" and doesn't go anywhere. This does not happen downstairs. By the way the hub is also downstairs. If you have any idea what's wrong that would be great, and thanks.

Right click on the internet explorer icon, select properties. Then inside the properties window go to Connection. Uncheck the "Detect Proxy" selection. That will stop it from doing that. Make sure you are set up for a DHCP if that is what your ISP wants.

This probably isnt what is stopping you. Have you ordered an extra IP address from your provider or are you running a router? You're not going to connect the second computer to the internet with just a hub unless you have been assigned a second IP addy, have a router, or use Internet Connection Sharing which requires a 2nd NIC in the primary computer.

Would a switch work in place of a router? Sorry, cant afford a router right now.
