I've run into a strange snag in my dual monitor setup. I have a 720p 42" LG and a 1080p 24" Acer monitor. I used to run the dual setup just fine with an older video card and monitor, but I recently upgraded to a Nvidia 9800GT and the Acer 24". I set the output to clone mode so I can watch movies and things on the TV, so the resolution and output has to be the same going out to each display. I don't like extending the desktop, I'd rather have it contained to the monitor.

The issue I'm having is that my TV won't accept 1080p input, it just shows a blank screen. So I figured I'd just display both the monitor and the TV in 1080i. Here's where it gets strange.

The TV is supposed to only support resolutions up to 1280x720, but it displays the 1920x1080 with a tiny bit of the edges off the screen, which is fine with me. That'd be great, but the monitor apparently doesn't support 1080i, the screen is kinda... "bouncy" and always in motion... it's unusable. I could've sworn the monitor is supposed to support 1080i tho. (Acer p244w) I didn't use the CD that came with the display, as I read that it doesn't really work... maybe that's the issue.

So my next strategy was to switch to 720p for both. That'd be fine with me. The problem here is, the highest 720p resolution supported is 1280x720, which looks pretty awful on the 24" monitor for everyday use. I've abandoned the 720p approach altogether due to this problem.

So then, I thought about finding a cheap video card that could output 720p with DVI, but from what I understand I'd still have to output the same signal in clone mode... is that correct? I'd prefer not to have to do this anyways, as I only have an old style PCI slot and a PCIe 1x slot open.

THEN, I thought about using a DVI to component converter, thinking that component maxes out at 720p, so an output of 1080p DVI converted to component would turn it into 720p... then I found some info that said my display most likely would still not be able to play the format. Is my understanding correct in this case as well?

My last thought was that in nView, I could set the TV to display full screen video whenever it's being played in a media player, and maybe it'd use the TV's natural resolution (used to work when I had a 4:3 monitor and a 16:9 TV with my old video card)... but that option isn't there like it used to be??? I can't for the life of me figure out why that's not in the list of options on the left anymore.

At this point, I'm about ready to give up and change the display settings every time I want to use the TV. It's so absurd that I'd have to do that though... there must be a simple solution, right?

Any help you can give me will be GREATLY appreciated.

Really for cloning to work properly you'd need 2 monitors supporting same resolutions. It may somewhat work otherwise but it opens up a Pandora's box of problems. The full screen redirect is indeed gone from nvidia, they claim it is not supported anymore - clickymeforinfo (https://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvidia.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2011&p_created=1169076830) - which totally sux monkey balls. Maybe an ATi card would help you achieve desired result is all I can think of.
