I am back with another of my stupid questions for anyone that has a little computer litteracy that might be able to school a youngster. I am still running my 233mhz Gateway with 32mb of RAM. Out of no where I am constantly getting page fault errors that are listing a fault in KERNELL.32dll and I have no idea what the problem is. I can't even run winamp with out it locking up. I am ready to install this new board and processor and forget it, but I want to know what the problem is and how to fix it. :(

-----Moved post to Operating Systems-----

You'll have better luck finding an answer here. May want to let us in on what OS you're running too. My guess is that 32MB just isn't enough anymore.

Sorry, I am running win 95 still. OS is actually what is holding me up from installing my new board. I am trying to get my hands on 2ooo or XP.

While I am here, any last suggestions for install. I have a cuscl2 board with piii 733mhz and 128 mb of Crucial sitting here waiting to go in. I also have upgrade to 300 watt power supply. I am going to use my current 9gig harddrive for the time being. I am trying to get either win 2k or xp. I think I will be better off with 2k. My HD is currently partitioned to 2 4.5gig drives. I am backing up files to the d: and I will format c: and go with a clean install of wither OS with the new install. this way hopefully I will be able to retrieve files and can change the partitioning with the new OS. I THINK. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. ---- Except "get a new HD" I know that I need one but money prevents at the moment. Will as soon as possible.

After you go through part of the installation for XP or Win2K you will be presented with the disk partition configurator. It will show all current partitions and will allow you to create, delete or format any of them.

If you delete the primary partition and chose to install your OS on it then the other partition will still be there (just don't make any changes to it). Just choose the C: to format and install on and when you complete the setup the D: will still be there will all data intact. It's always a good idea to back up any data you have to another medium before doing this "just in case", but it has always worked for me without problems in the past.

The basic answer to your original question about what causes page faults is a conflict between two programs that are attempting to use the same resource. Usually uninstalling and reinstalling programs will clear these problems. You will find that you will not see page fault errors very often, if ever, with either W2K or XP. In 3 months of using XP with multiple programs running at the same time I have yet to see a page fault error, have only had a couple of programs crash (like netscape, but it crashes more in one day on 98 than it has crashed in 3 months on XP) or lockup, and have had no OS crashes.

BTW, if you go with XP you will need the full version since you cannot use the upgrade version with 95.
