Im thinking about unlocking my XP1700+ and I know how to do it, I just want to know if there is any risk it gets killed?
I have already lost a XP1600+ (cooler fell of :( ) and I canīt afford to lose another cpu, so.. is there any risk it dies?
What happends if the silver gets in the pits, etc.?

Welcome to the forums,
Yes you can damage the cpu if the bridges get shorted together.
If you can't afford the possible loss it's best to leave it alone.

Welcomw to the Forums!

My Blurb: There are a bunch of Beginners' Guides HERE (http://www.overclockers.com) ,
A bunch of good info.

As far as unlocking the XP: yes, it is a risk and harder on XPs than it was on the earlier Athlons.

I unlocked mine, and checked to make sure all the multipliers were good, and they are. I then went about finding the best overclock for the chip in my MSI mobo and ended up using just FSB to oc it! I seem to have found the limits of the chip too, I think, as any higher mhz than 1725 is not stable, regardless of how I get it! (Although I made some big improvements to cooling recently and will have to try again:D )

Point is: why not just try fsb for now and see how you do? If you aren't happy THEN you can decide if you want to take the risk.

unlocked a t-bird and I intended to do my xp 1600+ the same night, but those pits are the pits, and the bridges are so small. In short, too much risk, and no back-up cpu to use if I messed it up.

Thank you very much!
I wonīt shorten the bridges together, I have a magnifying glass.. :)
If I donīt do that then there is no risk?
You see.. itīs very hard to leave it alone.. :D
