I think I was told that how quick a cpu can do calculations doesn't depend on how ghz it has. Is that true?

Yes, overclocking will make the CPU fold faster, provided you don't overheat it and kick in the thermal protection. How fast a CPU can do calculations depends on a number of things, namely clock speed and processor architecture. For example: a 3 GHz Core 2 Duo will crush a 4 GHz Pentium D in folding@home. Because of the different architectures the Core 2 is able to do more work per clock cycle, despite the Pentium D's higher clock speed.

It does make it faster but be sure your OC is stable..
