View Full Version : Putty Error???
My neighbor cannot connect with IE or FFox to the internet. We continually get this error message,
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn57/xantom666/PIC-0092.jpg
I don't know what Putty is and neither does he. I can connect wirelessly to his network, but can't get access wired or wirelessly. He is using a Link Sys wireless router. I have searched around and can't get any tangible solutions. I am not even sure where to start, so I was hoping someone may have seen this before.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
This isn't going to help on your main problem, but PuTTY is a terminal program. I use it to SSH to the shell on my ISP. If he didn't install it, I think it is likely that his box is compromised.
My thoughts also that he has something mucking up his box. I connected to his wireless connection with my laptop, and I also could not connect wired or wirelessly??? Possibly something has manipulated his router settings also???
Any other thoughts are appreciated.
... and what the hell is zatarama.zapto.org???

Um, yeah, thats probably not a good sign.
Have you tried to access the router or tried to reset it? Look around in the settings to see if there is anything suspicious looking in there?
Checked task manager for any running tasks that look, out of the ordinary? Tried booting into safe mode to see if you can hit the net from there?
zapto.org is a dns service like opendns. it's now called no-ip

I found that also, but what is zatarama. This is just very suspicious looking to me.
Thanks for posting.
Thanks for the post.

I can gain access to the router. The only thing that stood out to me was an IP setting listed as 192.168.2.2. Of course I didn't write that down. My knowledge of routers and their settings is a sliver above pedestrian so excuse my ignorance.

Everything looked ok, at a quick glance. I couldn't pinpoint anything related to PuTTY. I will try gaining access through safe mode next.
How do I go about resetting the router? I assume this is done inside the router and is not a recycle, ie unplugging and plugging back in.

To reset MOST routers, is just a simple little button on the back that is recessed in to the box a little (i.e. you need a pen or something to poke it). So unplug the router and then hold that button down for like 10 seconds. Plug ONLY the power back in, and wait for the lights to calm down. Then plug a laptop or something in and SET UP THE SECURITY right away, when you are done then plug the net back in.

Thanks I will do that.
try power cycling his modem and router first, he may not have any sort of internet connection, can you ping the Gateway?
also try tracert to www.google.com where does the hop time out? it should look similar to this :
C:\Users\gangaskan>tracert www.google.com
Tracing route to google.navigation.opendns.com [208.69.32.231]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1
2 10 ms 14 ms 10 ms cpe-75-187-224-1.neo.res.rr.com [75.187.224.1]
3 11 ms 14 ms 17 ms gig4-1.lornoh1-rtr1.neo.rr.com [24.164.105.201]
4 9 ms 9 ms 10 ms gig3-8.stvloh1-rtr1.neo.rr.com [24.164.105.190]
5 18 ms 9 ms 10 ms gig4-3.clvhoh1-rtr1.neo.rr.com [24.164.105.234]
6 11 ms 12 ms 12 ms tge1-0-0.clevoh1-rtr1.neo.rr.com [24.164.108.133
]
7 13 ms 15 ms 12 ms tge4-3-0.ncntoh1-rtr0.mwrtn.rr.com [65.25.137.21
3]
if you dont see it pass through your local ip's then you have a problem. (aka 192.168.1.1 or similar netowrk, possibly in this case, 192.168.2.1 or your "gateway IP")

Gangaskan, a very good point. I get the best luck at cycling the modem first then the routers. For the modem, again don't plug the net in till the lights slow down, then only the wire from the ISP, wait, and then the internal net.
But first I would do the trace route or ping.
Cycling it did nothing. I will attempt a reset, and let you know how that turns out.
Thanks for posting.

is it DSL or cable Xantom?
We did a hard reset on the DSL modem and it is working fine now. Thanks for all posts

no problem xan :)
sometimes the modem has a web interface that you can make changes on and denote if the connection is alive or not.

could it have once been a free dns service pointing to a dodgy website?
