I tried running mine with a beefy 850W but the two cards and an i7 were just too much for the PSU, so I put another 800 W in series...works great now

not sure if this will help but I was using a coolermaster 1kw 80 plus power supply for my 2 gtx 280 cards.
On the bottom card something near the 6 pin and 8 pin connector on the card blew and my system turned off, I got a plum of smoke and a sizzle, this repeated each time I powered it back on. Defective card, I just purchased them on newegg and had this card rma'd and now I have a brand new replacement.
I took out the power supply and replaced it with an abs tagan 1300watt power.
I figure it is safer to get a more powerful and effecient power supply just in case.
If your serious about your gamming rig and it sounds like you are with your quad-sli gtx 295 cards, you need to get the best power supply you can find, and that may cost you 300 dollars or more, Don't buy cheap parts for your killer gamming rig, do it right.
In your case i'd go with ABS 1300 watt power supply all the way, go look it up on newegg.
At the bare minimum your going to want a 1000watt power supply, especially under load, your video cards are drawing a ton of current and if your set up is not rock solid who knows what will happen, prolly not run stable.
you got the best video cards, now go get the best power supply!
