I'm looking at buying a nice router for my home network. 4-port 10/100 speed... Does anyone no how well the Linksys one works? How is this one comparable to netgears products? what other companies produce good router?

I have the Linksys- its excellent and I recommend it highly

Netgears router is also very popular and there are a bunch of other models/manufacturers that make equally good ones; I'm sure there will be more posts about them as well.

Basically, the entire internet backbone is connected via Cisco Sytems equipment in one way or another.

They're, by far, the largest manufacturer of enterprise level routers and switches (and alot of other "stuff") in the world.

I can't say anything about the other routers as I've never seen any of them. But I put in a Linksys router a couple of months ago. It was a piece of cake to set up & I've had no problems with it.

Mine's a D-link, it was a breeze to install, and seems to work flawlessly. Got it with WinXp for $100us-$50 instore rebate- $50 mail in rebate = $0. Gotta love that price.

Got my linksys router this week. I had a replacement plan for the Netgear RT314 that went on me. Had that like 7 months or something.

Ok, yeah I have to admit, I feel like an idiot.
I've got the Linksys 4 port, got it off my cousin for 50 canadian, he got a T1 wireless with a telecommunications tower in his backyard, so he set up a server box and didn't need a router anymore.

But now of course, as my look would have it, I have had phil the prince of insufficient light's own time trying to get the thing to work.

Now, mind you, does it not work just because I'm an idiot, or does my lone Rogers@home account in the Toronto area have something to do with it?

Any help?

Sorry, lost you on the phil the prince thing...

Anyway, what is your problem, specifically?

simply put, got router, can't make it work.
want more details? more specifically, want more details in a coherent manner? thought so.
I've got the router, and though it says it requires a crossed over cable from the modem to the router, but if I do that I get no signal if i use straight through, the lights go on, which is good, normally.
But i'm just having a horrible time trying to configure the thing.
easier to understand? ignore the phil comment

thanks for any help you may have

I'm about to try something, hope it works, but i'm worried when the spelling is worse than typos warrant

installed and set up seven linksys routers with no hassle at all so far (that is, until lightning struck our building TWICE in a 1.5 month timeframe and FRIED our WHOLE NETWORK, gah...). linksys routers and NIC's get a "two thumbs up" rating from me for both price and useage.

For what it's worth I just got the Linksys BEFSR41 V.2 4 port Cable/DSL Router. I have absolutely NO networking background, and had a problem getting the router to recognize and receive my IP info from my cable modem. Called Linksys Tech Support and actually spoke with a REAL HUMAN being in fairly short time frame and this human actually was interested and intelligent enough to walk me through the whole process.

If support counts for anything give me LINKSYS!

I just bought the Linksys BEFSR41v2 for $80.00 at Best Buy last weekend. Works great and I recommend it, good model, brand and price. :)

I have the Linksys and cant stand this cheap POS. The DMZ doesnt work the way a real DMZ should. You are limited in the number of ports that you can map. And it's firmware is shakey at best.

I'm giving this thing to a buddy and getting an SMC Barricade. It's cheaper than the linksys, has a printer server built in, the user interface is better and more complete. I have used one for a while and fell in love with it.

If youre not knowledgeable on the internet, routing, and port use, then get the linksys. If you plan on learning this stuff or are already in the know the linksys will do nothing but annoy you constantly, get something better.
