Can manually flashing your system for USB 2.0 kill your external hard drive?

I noticed even after updating to SP3 that I didn't have a Via USB 2.0 Enhanced Controller in my devices, only a Via Rev 5 Universal host controller. My Freeagent was USB 2.0 compatible, so I manually downloaded the VIA drivers and updated my system.

The Free Agent worked wonderfully for about a week, but now it barely ever works and I'm constantly getting the delayed write failed, C:\$Mft error. Is this because I left it plugged in to the Usb port when I updated everything?

It works rarely sometimes, when I plug it in for about 30 minutes or so, then it will start slowing down when I browse through the folders and eventually stop working.

Have you tried the drive on another PC? I have a FreeAgrent Pro [USB and eSATA], IMO it's a POS, flakey at best. It seems to work when it feels like it, same on XP, Mac OSx and Linux... Hopefully the drive will work for you still, I'd try another PC to check.

updating the drivers on your board should have no physical effect on your USB HDD.

I would recommend you try it on another PC as suggested.
If it doesn't work, I would try to remove the HDD out of the case and testing in a PC if you really need the data on it. I don't know if the bare drive would still have warranty if you did this. It's possible the enclosure is the problem, and you could buy another enclosure to put that hard drive in.

I tried it in my cousin's Mac and it didn't show up, I'll try to take it out of the enclosure and see if that works. Thanks for the replies though :)
