Yesterday I managed to get SETI running again in my main box.....now in Windows XP Pro.....

Just a little reminder to all of you folks. Remember to set your Virtual Memory to fixed value, move it to the start (outer sectors) of the HD and defregmentate your data. I'm now having 7.25 WU insted of 6.9 WU with my PIII850E@stock.....Tonight I'll defrag/move swap file and hope to return to my previous times.....

Keep on crunching full speed.

PS. What services I can remove from the core of XP without compromising the stability of the system? When I check all the processes I have running I just see lots of them.....

P.S.S. I have been running with the memory asyncronous and have shaved 5-10% of my times.....So if you have the possibility you can try it ;)

I wasn't aware that you could specify where the swap file is written to the drive. Look here for tips on services:
http://www.3dspotlight.com/tweaks/win2k_services/index.shtml Most of this applies to XP as well since it's really a continuation of NT.

I use Norton to do this.

You can also use the Virtual Memory Settings from Windows itself and set it to the fastest hard drive. Win2K is System Properties> Advanced> Swap File or PageFile I forgot and then you select a different drive unless your talking about a Norton Defrag program then that would be speedisk.

I also heard that if your on 512+ ram you shouldn't be using a page/swap file.

I don't recall, and I can't see since I'm 2000 miles away from home. :) It's part of Systemworks. I'm thinking DiskDoctor or WinDoctor, maybe. If I remember correctly, it's part of the Optimization group. I'm sure someone else here will be able to offer the name.

What's really nice is if you have greater than 512MB you can disable paging executive and enable large system cache in the registry - makes a nice speed boost.

Ill try that but guessing with NT Kernal you wouldn't have to worrying about instablity after 24 hours of an uptimelike you in do in Win 98 with the swap file right?

Yodums No worries m8 :) I've got machines here configured this way that haven't been rebooted for over a year running on a ups.
