Rules

- Sign-ups: Monday, February 2nd @ 7:00pm PST through Saturday, February 28th @ 11:59pm PST. (pending number of participants - see Minimum Participants)

The sign-up thread is LINK'D HERE (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?p=5968668). You must have a post in the sign-up thread with your Folding ID by the sign-up deadline to participate.

- Contest duration: Sunday, March 1st @ 1:30am PST through Sunday, March 29th @ 1:29am PST. (pending number of participants - see Minimum Participants)

This contest has been aligned with the Stanford Folding week, please note all times are Pacific Standard (PST) Time. Official progress numbers will be tallied and shown in this thread and updated periodically (every 2~3 days). Otherwise, you may track your progress using any third-party stats site you choose.

_________________________________________________

- What you need to do: Fold work units for Team 32. :) Each completed WU (work unit) returned to Stanford during the contest period will earn the participant one entry for the prize drawing... think about it like a raffle.

This contest is not about points... it's about science! You do not need the latest hardware, a large Folding farm, or otherwise to participate in this contest and have a chance at winning. All those things will certainly help increase your chances, but a participant who Folds only one WU within the contest period still has one chance to win the prize. A participant with a single machine can win this contest. OCF members from our SETI and Benchmarking Teams can win this contest. Folders from other Teams who sign-up and Fold WUs for Team 32 can win this contest, so spread the word.

This contest is open to any and all who sign-up and Fold WUs for Team 32 within the contest period.

The bottom line is, to better your chances of winning... Fold more WUs, and thus do more science, for Team 32. Simple.

- Surprise PPD Contest: I will also be tracking participants' PPD over the entire contest period. I will compare each participant's contest PPD against their PPD from the week prior to the contest. The participant with the greatest gain in PPD will be awarded an NVIDIA 9800GT (card model is at the top of this post).

- Contest PPD Calculation: Each participant's contest PPD is calculated by taking their total points in the contest period divided by the number of days completed in the contest period. For example, user A has accumulated 10,000 points in the contest period through day 10. User A's PPD would then be 1,000 PPD.

_________________________________________________

- Minimum Particpants: A minimum of 100 participants are needed to run this contest. If by the end of the sign-up period 100 participants have not been accounted, the sign-ups will be continually extended until the next Saturday @ 11:59pm PST until 100 participants are accounted.

- Minimum Average Points per Returned WU: Each participant is required to achieve a minimum average of 100 points per returned WU for the entire contest period. If that minimum is not achieved by a participant, their total points for the entire contest period will be divided by 100 and rounded up to the next integer- this resulting number will be their number of contest entries.

- EUEs: Excessive EUEs will not be tolerated. Violations of this rule will be dealt with on a case by case basis at the sole discretion of the contest administration, possibly resulting in dismissal from the contest if that user does not stop the excessive EUEs. This rule does not imply that a user who has a machine EUE a few times will be dismissed, such a situation will likely go unnoticed. The term excessive is not being defined here and will be left up to the contest admin to determine what is excessive. The bottom line, if a user is contacted about EUEs and they fix the issue, there will be no issue.

- Server Blocking: Blocking of Stanford Server IP addresses will not be tolerated. Violations of this rule will be dealt with on a case by case basis at the sole discretion of the contest administration, possibly resulting in dismissal from the contest.

The members of this Team are honest, respectable people. I don't believe there will be any issue with rule violations. However, the consequences for someone caught intentionally trying to cheat need to be, and have been, clearly stated.

Admin

This contest will be administered by yours truly. Wow! How fast does a year go by anymore? This is the 2nd Annual "March Madness"... can you believe it? If you'd like to check out the results from our contests last year, please see the Folding Contest Directory (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=571100) thread, we had a lot of fun. :) I take the administration of this contest seriously and I hope all who participate are confident that the contest will administered fairly.

- Goals: The goals of this contest are to boost the production of current Team 32 members, recruit new members into our great Team and Project, and most importantly... play fair and have fun!

- Questions? - Please post in this thread.

Thank you for letting members of other teams join in your contest.

I fold for Team 31630. It's a team with only 18 active folders ranked at 231 currently but on the rise. We could use a good video card to help us out so I thought I would enter.

Thank you for the opportunity.:)

Ohh this is good timing... My new I7 Flagship Is scheduled to be completed in a couple of days. I think it's time to recall the fleet into active duty...

Starting Numbers are up and available for viewing in the Top Post (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=594478&postcount=1)!

Please check your starting numbers. New users who did not have a record under Team 32 will be shown with 0 for points and work units. These numbers reflect Stanford stats dated 03-01-09 @ 01:30:00 PST.

The starting numbers provide the baseline for calculating progress throughout the contest. If you believe there is an error with your starting numbers do not distress, please PM me and we'll get it straightened out. You will not lose any progress or credit if there is an error that needs fixed.

- Surprise PPD Contest: I will be tracking participants' PPD over the entire contest period. I will compare each participant's contest PPD against their PPD from the week prior to the contest. The participant with the greatest gain in PPD will be awarded an NVIDIA 9800GT.

For example, user A has accumulated 10,000 points in the contest period through day 10. User A's PPD would then be 1,000 PPD.

. The participant with the greatest gain in PPD will be awarded an NVIDIA 9800GT.

For clarification, greatest increase, or greatest % increase?

Duner
03-02-09, 01:51 AM
The PPD is quite a nice surprise. I wish I hadn't started crunching 1 week early so that my PPD would have started at 0. I just wanted to make sure that everything was running properly and hit the start running.

harlam357
03-02-09, 08:42 AM
For clarification, greatest increase, or greatest % increase?

Greatest increase. Since percentage would be completely relative to the individual user, I don't believe that would be fair... and there will always be different opinions on what is and isn't fair... my goal is to do what I feel gives each participant the best chance at winning.

If someone who does 40,000 ppd adds an 8800GT and someone who does 10,000 ppd adds an 8800GT, that increased contribution will be relatively the same and their contest PPD increase will also reflect this increased contribution relatively equally.

I feel using each participants current PPD as a baseline puts everyone on a "level" (as level as it can be) playing field. Also, there would be no way for me to calculate a percentage increase for those who were producing 0 ppd the week prior to the contest.

Everyone needs to be aware that this "Contest PPD" is calculated over the entire contest period. So at the end of the contest there will be 28 days worth of Folding which will comprise the PPD number. For example, at the end of the show someone has earned 250,000 points in 28 days. Their "Contest PPD" will be 8928.6.

I had some questions about that calculation last time around... it must be noted that the PPD I calculate will likely not fall in line with what one sees on EOC, since that PPD number only includes the previous 7 days. However, the "baseline" PPD number is based on the 7 days prior to the contest. My reasoning for using a smaller time period for the "baseline" is to get the most accurate "snapshot" of what everyone is currently producing.

If anyone has any suggestions for improvements for future contests... I'm all ears. I want to give you guys the competition that reflects Team 32's wants/needs/goals. I am a servant of the Team. :)

I think they will! like harlam said, I feel using each participants current PPD as a baseline puts everyone on a "level" (as level as it can be) playing field. Also, there would be no way for me to calculate a percentage increase for those who were producing 0 ppd the week prior to the contest. So sure, if a user goes from 0 to 20,000+ppd for a month i think thats a sweet deal for us and them!

Well I just tossed in another client, single core running on a celeron 2.8 with notfred's USB folding. It brining in about 175ppd, better than nothing I guess, its actually pretty similar to my A64 fileserver.

I'm honestly quite impressed, I've always been quite biased against celerons, and its doin pretty well.

Due to the stats upgrades Stanford has been going through I'm not sure exactly how this will effect their stats process. I'll just have to wait and see. Just be aware that the contest may end on Pacific Daylight Time in lieu of the scheduled Pacific Standard Time. What's an hour, eh? :D I will confirm the end time tomorrow afternoon once I have the latest stats dump.

Ok, here's the deal on the the time change. Stanford has not changed their update times so the stats are still being run on Pacific Standard. That means the contest will do the same. I do want to inform everyone that the stats dumps I've been pulling are dated at 1:30 am PST. So the official contest start and end times will coincide with that time, 1:30 am PST. I will update the contest post to reflect those times. All that means is that the contest actually started 1 1/2 hours later than anticipated, and it will end 1 1/2 later than anticipated. No big deal in the grand scheme of things.

Looks like this SMP and GPU are really doing some good. Normally this far into a folding contest, I would only have 5 WU's turned in if I was lucky on that old P4. But I also think the little one turned on my PS3 yesterday, which might have contributed to a little PPD bump. She has this thing about playing with the controllers like she's playing a game.

It does, but it gets really hot. (and I need something to plug into the HDMI port) Plus I just took a look at the log now and its not folding due to EUE. I don't even have this card overclocked. Anybody got any tips?

Edit: I found that I'm not the only one having this problem. I'll try disabling multi gpu mode and try again tomorrow when I can fire it back up again

harlam357

You have RivaTuner installed? If so, make sure the fan on that card is set in the 90~100% range.

The i7 needs two more VMs to maximize it's HT capabilities, and PPD. ;) The q6600 looks like a standard client to me. You could run two VMs there as well. :)

I'd say you're looking at another ~10k ppd if you get those other VMs and GPU running... probably more! :)

You may want to check out how last year's contests went down. See here: http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=571100

It doesn't take a Folding "army" to have a chance at victory. It's all luck of the draw. :)

I'm going to start a new thread here soon... asking for new ideas for future contests. The "most productive new member" sounds interesting. When adding these ideas please think about how this distiction would be determined. What time frame constitues a "new" member? 1 week, 1 month, 3 months? And how would "most productive" be determined? Total points over a specific time period? Current 7 day PPD on a specific day (end of each month maybe)?

Just putting the bug in ya'lls ears... it's easy to say and another thing to quantify. ;)

Lastly, stats update tonight... it may or may not be decently late tonight. I've got family in from up North.

Thanks for considering my suggestion. My idea of "new" member to folding the team would be someone who has joined less than 3 months. The most productive part would be up to you guys. I think this would be more fun and encourage more people to fold on the forums if not everyone is doing it already. It might even encourage non forum members to join. :p I do realize that the award is based on luck of draw. But since you get an amount of entry based on how many work units you complete, wouldn't it be safe to say that those with larger farms capable of completing 30-50 work units a day would have an incredibly higher winning chance than those with only 1-4 farming rigs? I do however don't know how many in team 32 have a farms of more than 4 rigs so yeah :P

thanks for the update, though its weird, my average PPD has been over 10k for the past 3 days or so, and this update from a day ago says Im at 8.5k... hopefully the next update will have the updated stats!

Keep it up man, great work!

harlam357
03-25-09, 12:00 PM
Remember, your contest PPD number seen here accounts for all your points over (and days in) the entire contest period.

Say you were doing 8.5k PPD for 25 days. You total points for the contest would be 212,500 or 8.5k PPD. Now for the next three days you do 10k per day. Now your total points would be 242,500. Those points over a 28 day period would yield 8660.7 PPD.

It's kind of tough to raise your contest PPD late into the contest due to the way this calculation is done... that's just the way it works.

Speechless Folks,,,,, under normal economic conditions I would ask Harlam to pick another winner...... there are so many of you on the Team that are more deserving then I am....:o

But I have not been able afford all the parts to convert a rig(and still pay my taxes:eek:) and this is a godsend!

I'll only need to buy a Mobo and PSU, I should be able to take the heat from my wife for that....I pray the Flowers for Valentines day are still in her memory banks!!;)

Thank you Hack30 for the Great donation! and Thank you Harlam for running the contest. and Thank you to the other folks who donated prizes

and Thanks to my teammates for wishing me well!

Should have it up and running 24/7 in 2 weeks:beer: It will be a pure folding box to keep in nature of this contest.

She just reminded me that I didn't give her any darn flowers....She got a card, dinner and romance. So I scored points for the romance....but lost points for not remembering...and now she's asking me what happened to the Phillies Avatar!!

Last piece arrived. I let the SMP on the Ubuntu rig run. So I need to swap everything. 2 hours for the hardware...I'll cross my fingers on the software. I'll do my best to have it running tonight.

Need driver recommendation. Vista 180.*** what?

Win 7/9800GTX.

I'm partial to 185.20, or 181.20. 185.20 seems to boost the PPD on the first card by almost 2K ppd for some reason, and last time I checked the thread on it, stanford had said it wasn't messing the work up at all (which was everyones initial concern about the increase).

harlam357
04-04-09, 09:59 AM
Really? Still seeing more PPD with 185.20? The science should be fixed now, so I guess no harm in running those drivers. Since the initial effect was only seen on Vista, my guess is that this increase you're seeing is also on Vista?

Just an update... torin3 is our next best PPD Producer and has chosen the Mirror's Edge PC Game as his prize.

I must apologize as I just really dropped the ball on getting these games given away... thankfully my time is going to free up a bit again here soon as work is going to slow down a touch.

Thanks again to everyone who participated... I look forward to doing this again soon. :)
