View Full Version : Newblet to OC: ram problems?

Ok. I bought a motherboard/cpu combo hoping to get a cheap gaming rig outta it because I researched that the q6700 was extremely oc-able. It came with an Nvidia Nforce board, I thought, hey it is made for oc right? hmm having some troubles so far. Minor, but still problems nonetheless.

As far as I can tell I have this for ram:
Corsair TWIN2X4096-6400C5 G (http://www.corsair.com/_datasheets/TWIN2X4096-6400C5.pdf) Positive it's the 800mhz
I am assuming my timings/speed are off on the ram as it's running slow (think it's the ram) I need someone to explain and help me fix them as I don't know which settings are which in the bios. I know where they are, just not what they are. Maybe a diff fsb/multi combo to make them run smoother?

Mobo is Nforce 630i/7100 with this cooler: Masscool 8WA741

I have no clue what I'm doing other than being VERY computer technical (with exception to a few bios settings, cause they are all different).

CPU currently runs at 3.0ghz (fsb 1200 multi10), stock voltage, (I think unless it auto sets it but I didn't up it anywhere in bios) which is fine atm. Flawlessly has been up for over 24 hours so I'd say it's stable. But noticed my games are playing a bit under the weather (ram?) compared to before the oc. Stress tested it for a few hours at full load to determine max temps when I first oc'd it. Doesn't ever go above 56-57c (max for chip is 60c and 1.5v).

Unlinked ram. Set the setting to 800mhz in bios (which was what it said it was at stock). Left the auto timings (was this wrong?).
CPU-Z says:

I need some help troubleshooting and I was hoping that I could try some other combos to fix this issue with ram? Will check back tomarrow as I won't be home in the morning possibly. Thanks. <3

The timings are a little tighter than advertised, though that shouldn't be too much of a problem. First, check the RAM voltage to make sure it's set to 1.9v. It should be labeled as DRAM voltage or DDR2 voltage, or something of that sort. Then, try running Memtest86+ overnight to see if the RAM is actually the problem. If any errors come up, then there's something wrong somewhere in the data path to the memory.

If you do end up with some errors, you may need a little more power on the north bridge. I don't know what's a safe voltage there for Nforce boards, so I'll let someone else answer that one. Just for reference, my P35 north bridge runs at 1.29v, as opposed to stock 1.25v.

Make sure tRFC is 50+

Ram Voltage is set at 1.9 already. If I take the ram timings off auto there's like 7 different settings I can change. Is it ok to just change the tRFC one and leave the others? How do I manually set the timings myself for those? I actually ran memtest (as per advice elsewhere on someone else's forum) last night till this morning but I couldn't see anything wrong. I didn't see "failed" anywhere on it so I assume it passed? When the ram was running linked games weren't running "choppy" or slightly lagging. I'm kinda scared to alter voltages elsewhere...

Someone told me today my ram speed should say 1:1 to make it run full speed, what do I need to do to get this?

Edit: ran memtest again, one pass, and it came up clean. idk......arg!...*pulls out hair* I need some help, this is hard.

Yes it's OK to change individual timings, speeds, and or voltages. I would set those 5-5-5-15 2.0v tRFC 55
Setting those is in the bios. Each mobo differs in proceedure and terminology. You may want to download Memset to see the timings from Windows (some mobos allow you to change timings from Memset without going to bios): http://www.tweakers.fr/memset.html

idk what 5-5-5-15 means, which are 5's and which is 15?

In memset I started from the top and went down put 5-5-5-15 and tRFC to 55 BUT I'd really like to change over these settings to in bios instead of software clock it....do the labels correspond to the bios settings or are they different as you said above?

Edit to add: Would the 3:4 ratio matter at all for the speed when it was 1:1 before the overclocking?

The four numbers are CAS (tCL) - tRCD - tRP - tRAS

Ok awsome! changed them but in my bios I don't see the setting for tRFC anywhere, by any chance is it one of these? (they are all I have left and are all set to auto)
CMD (command/clock)
tRRD
tRC <--maybe this one?
tWR
tWTR

After I rebooted and looked in memset again it says my tRFC is set at 41. I didn't change anything as far as the other settings go.
