Just wondering, as I might be buying a laptop, who makes good ones ? And does Compaq make good laptops ? I like the new 700 series, so any comments on them ?
thanks !
My bro has the Dell Inspiron, very good labtop no freezes or anything comes very well equipped with the P3-M processor.
When labtop brand comes to mind Dell comes to mind :D

I am now on my third: two Toshibas and a Dell.
They first two were good, in their day (150 and 266mhz) and the new one has the Mobile Celeron 1ghz and is okay- I think most of the weaknesses are due to the os: Windows XP.
I don't care for comcrap generally (tried to work on a few of their desktops) but their laptops are ok. Just not as good as Dell and Toshiba.
Just don't get WinX(tra)P(oor). IMO.
Win XP for labtop isn't good at all, that is definitely agreed on.
As labtops are now reducing back and coming back with like 128mb now since the memory prices soared...

Compaq makes some of the worst laptops ever! Most Compaqs I have worked with were poorly designed and overheated.
I am partial to Dell laptops:D (I repair Latitudes)
Toshibas are good, Sonys are good, IBMs are really good, but overpriced. Some of the Gateways are OK. Avoid Compaq, HP and little known brands. Laptops are propritary and you need the support that a major manufacturor provides.
Oh yea I forgot about Toshiba and Sony but I personally like Dell the best out of all of them.

I wasn't gonna go for HP anyway, as I have had some bad experiences with them, and their support sucks major @$$ ! (at least for their Pavilion products, maybe for their printers or scanners it's good, donno)
dell inspirion all around, sony for dv editing, ibm for business, and compaq if you want a paperweight.

I know a good one: a Toshiba T3200SX. I got one and love it. Only downside: About 15 pounds:D And only has a 386:D And you can't OC it:(
Lol, actually, i know nothing about remotely new ones. I just had to mention mine though, it's so blazingly fast! for 1989 that is...
dell all the way, my dad did their chipsets and they are highly reliable
you might want to check Dells refurbished notebooks, and if you find one, let me know
i get pretty good discounts at Dell and we could maybe work a deal

Thanks everyone !
Thanks for the offer Trey_w ! I'll check on their site, and I'll let you know if I find anything. BTW, does Dell sell their refurbished systems to Canadians ?
yea, why not, just over the border.

I'm working on my laptop in the sig, right now, but i can't say I would really recommend it. Know that if you get a laptop with anything more than the bare minimum, you're getting something heavy. I went with the Inspiron 4000 instead of the 8000 because it was a few pounds lighter, but I really don't think it would have made a difference, I still have a hard time carrying this thing around. It's powerful enough to game on, even Q3/wolfenstein will run, quite decently, but if I could do it again I would either go for a VERY light, very thin system at 700 MHz or so, or one with the Athlon MP mobile and the GeForce 2 Go, if I could find that combination. I would recommend Dell if you need the support. I've found that even though I paid for the 3 year all bells and whistles support, I didn't need it. I could have gotten the standard 1 year deal and survived. However, I do have to state that I haven't dropped it down the stairs or anything, yet, and that would be covered, so it might turn out for the better. Do a lot of hunting before you buy, and go with what you want, not what you think is more practical(I would have bought a WinBook X1 if I had done that).

Go to you 'user cp' and get into 'edit options'. At the bottom of the page, you'll find the Avatar section. Herein lies the answer to your quest.

I love my sony VAIO pcg-gr250, here's the specs:
pentium III-m(tualatin) 1ghz
133mhz fsb
512mb pc133 cas 2 ram
win xp home
dvd/cdrw combo drive
14" screen-15" was 500 more, and not worth it to me
ati radeon-m 16mb dedicated, up to 32 allocatable
30gb hdd, ata100
I've not had one problem with it whatsoever, and i got a deal on it as well, only paid 1499 for it. the battery lasts mucho longer than any amd laptop system out there, sony's line of fxa laptops all have amd processors, from durons to athlon4 mobiles. they do eat the batteries up though! oh, and the gr series doesn't come with a floppy, but that doesn't worry me anyhow, i don't realy use floppies with a cdrw drive anyhow. definitely worth a look. and i can personally vouch for it's droppability, i've dropped this one 3 times, no marks on it since it was carpet, but no hardware or software problems either.
I had a Dell Latitude for about 2 years and it was great....never had a problem with it. I would highly recommend Dell. Now, I have a Sony Vaio pcg-fx340 and that's been a great laptop as well.....I have it running 24/7 and haven't had a problem. I think if it didn't have windows xp on it it'd be even better though. :)
