View Full Version : 1066 ram for very best performance?

I'm "Probably" going to a SSD and a nice, fast video card today. Will ddr2 800 keep my performance down?
What's the fsb on your CPU? If you can keep the ram at 1:1 then you don't need to upgrade.

What card? I doubt it will slow it down too much, as timings can be tighter. Wait until afterwards, and see if it is bottlenecking. Then you will know if you need to upgrade the memory.

Faster RAM speed will give better performance. The real question is do you feel the benefit justifies the cost. Many here don't see enough "real world" benefit. But RAM is so cheap at this point....why not?
Rick, the OCZ reps claim that there are issues with AMD on the 2x2gig ram kits. So far, I have only seen this with their sets, so I would suggest GSkill or Corsair ram at this point in time. I don't know if there are any real world benefits to the higher speeds, but the bandwidth test seem to respond speed over ram timings. As 18 is # 1 has noted, at these prices you might as well get the best.

The 2x2GB GSkill, Reaper, Dominator, and Mushkin 1066 all use Powerchip ICs and will run about the same speeds (1100-1120 MHz).
A step up from there would be GSkill Pi 1100s which use different ICs and will hit about 1160: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231194

I just picked up some Gold OCZ 8500 and it won't boot at 1066.
Edit: I lied! Just retested and got a very slow Bench with the Gskill at 800 compared to 1066.
Also for the thread starter. according to Sandra, I get about 20% better bandwidth when running my Gskill 8500 @800 Mhz instead of 1066.
Phenom 2 940
MSI k9a2 plat
2x2gb Gskill
2x2gb OCZ.
My results were quite different, but I probably should have left bandwidth tests out of my comment as Sandra's tests are all over the place in that department. I think the read, write and latency testing in Everest are probably a better measure, but I'm not someone who sits around a runs benches all day. Those folks know a lot more about it than me.
