I am going to a computer show and I was wondering if I should keep my eyes out for any overclocking friendly cpu's. I know there are different steppings, so Which ones should I keep my eyes peeled for?
I have a PIII 600 mhz now, so I would like to hit at least 1.2 or 1.5 ghz without overclocking. I want DDR memory so I think AMD would be a better processor correct?
I'm not sure what you're looking for. But if I was going to a show tomorrow with a bit of cash in my pocket, I'd look for another XP1600+, another Epox 8KHA+, and some "quality" DDR ram.
The XP1600+ is at 1.4G default and hits 1600MHz+ rather easily. This CPU seems to be at the sweet spot for cost / performance. Should be able to find it at a show for $105/125.
The Epox 8KHA+ (note the "+") with the KT266A chipset is an overclockers dream. I've had the FSB on one of mine to 200MHz+, although I get better memory scores at 166 without the memory divisor. Look for it for about $100/110 at a show.
DDR memory, not much to say here, look at the prices over the last two months. Quality costs in this department although even low end may be good for 160FSB. You would do better on line. I've not had real great returns with my Crucial PC2100 though.
As far as the Intel motherboards and DDR, I can't really comment too much on this. I don't really follow this line but I have seen DDR/P4's becoming more common. I don't know about the PIII/DDR, Check in the "INTEL Motherboard" section of this site for a better answer.
Good Luck, I hope to see more of you over here at the "other” side.
