I haven't even been folding for under a month now, mostly just GPU while I figure stuff out, and I'm already hooked.

http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=425570

I got some presents in the mail today (3x8800GS)... the rest of the stuff will be here friday. I'm stoked.

I lost my Grandmother to Cancer and my Grandfather to Alzheimer's, so something about this project just grabbed me right away.

"Reel 'er in boys... we just bagged us a 'nother one!"

Sweet new stuff there SM! Glad to have you here and Folding with us. :)

I'm saddened to hear about the loss of your grandparents... :( However, it is nice to know that you have a personal interest in what this project is trying to accomplish.

I think that makes the reward, and the fun getting there, all that much sweeter. :)

Put a couple of the GSs in my main rig to see how they do... I'm happy with the numbers:

wow, nice points there, I wish my 3870 produced that much.
As soon as I get some free cash I'm gonna get me one of them to throw into my server.

Well I setup another folder today... Definately an amusing one. Stock it was an HP MiniTower, rocking a Celeron D, 512mb, 250w psu, etc.

Now that I've gotten to it it's: Lapped E4300, 2GB, OCZ 600w, GTX260.

Makes me laugh just looking at it, definately a little sleeper. When the rain lets up (only have a motorcycle atm) I'm gonna go grab a conductive pen and try my luck with the BSEL mods.

Just the GPU client is pulling ~5-7kppd, once I get the CPU up a little I'm setup VMWare.

Yeah me too haha. Had to move the HDD up to the second space and cut one of the mounts off the lower one. Also lost a couple sata ports in the process. Pretty neat little setup though. Everything runs suprisingly cool, probably because the whole front of the case is mesh and theres a vent on the side panel running along the gtx260.

SM, it looks vey nice, even if it is a tight fit. I lost several of my sata ports in my rig when I installed the 2nd video card, because I don't have any right-angle sata cables. I also had to lower my DVD burner, because the sata cable wouldn't reach.

Well the lolhp is making a just over 8k ppd between gpu and WinSMP clients, really need to do the bsel mod to 1066 and setup vmware. All in all I'm impressed with it, and its super quiet.

Reformatting it now with Server 08 (for x64) for the VMs, still gotta go grab that conductive pen.

FYI for any folders out there that happen to be students, you can get a 100% free/100% legal copy of Server 08 from microsoft. With a few tweaks its basically a faster version of Vista... feels a little quicker like Win7.

Pretty good actually. If you look straight into the case from the front, you can see straight through it. The entire front is mesh, and I put a Panaflo H fan in the back on a FanMate and its running fantastically.

Mwaha that was too easy:

http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu32/supermotarded/lolhp_4.jpg

At first it did nothing but I noticed the bios was over a year old and when I updated that it posted at 2.4.

So I setup VMware 2 and am on a x64 os with an x64 copy of ubuntu, and it gives me an error saying i only have an i686 processor when trying to setup. Any ideas? I've used this exact iso to setup vms on my main machine with no issues...

E4300 does not support virtualization required for the VM. I have an E4300 running native Linux (Ubuntu) folding SMP.

Argh :-/

Thanks for the answer though, now I can stop googling for answers. I'm so close to 20k ppd it hurts, I was convinced VMs would give me the last 1k I'm looking for...

http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu32/supermotarded/18kppd.jpg

How does the GPU client do in Ubuntu? Would native ubuntu SMP + GPU be better than vista gpu + winsmp?

harlam357
02-16-09, 08:43 AM
The Ubuntu would definitely help the SMP client... however, setting up GPU2 for nvidia on Linux isn't Run -> Next -> Next -> Finish.

It can be done... and there are detailed instructions here (http://gpu2.twomurs.com/index.php?title=Main_Page) on how to do it. I'm not sure, however, if the GPU2 would take a loss of production because of it.

I recommend just sticking with what you've got... unless you're just dying to get away from Vista. :D

Nice PPD....
 I'm excited about it. Varies anywhere from 14k-24k depending on WUs, so I guess that's cool. I'm getting a decent ammount back on my taxes and am probably gonna unload a netbook I don't use anymore on eBay, so with any luck I'd like to grab a couple GX2s to replace the GS's. Have to wait and see though, I heard some thing on the radio that CA is issuing IOUs for state refunds rather than checks :(

Harlam, thanks for the ubuntu info... My linux abilities are SEVERLY limited so I think I'll have to wait on the native ubuntu untill it really is a click-next-finish kind of install.

For some reason I keep gettting a NANs detected error of the GTX/C2D box, so I think I'm just going to end up selling the entire computer on CL and grabbing a couple GX2s or something

I don't understand why I'm getting that error though... I folded on that card 24/7 in a different rig and the shaders were pushed up. In this one even at stock clocks it gives that error... Temps never go over 60c. Rig also passes every stability test as far as the cpu oc is concerned.

Those cards look awesome... Where did you end up getting them for a reasonable price?

And i take it you picked those cards due to the best PPD/$ and PPW?

Yeah I read a bunch of threads comparing PPD and PPW and liked the look of those. I snagged all 3 for $135 :sn:

Unfortunately the fans on them were insanely loud, so I put a couple VF700s I had on them (see avatar). I'd have been mad if I had to spend another $30 each for heatsyncs just to make them bearable.

eBay. If you hunt for them they close anywhere from 40-70 a piece.

You might try bumping the chipset voltages.

I had a P5Qpro board folding fine with X3210, but GPU had higher error than typical until the chipset voltages were increased slightly. Never did go back and determine which one was the culprit.

The NAN errors were coming from that hp setup. I put it back in my main rig and tried it to make sure it was fine before I sold it and it didn't have any issues... just didn't like the HP I guess
