I just spent a good 15 mins browsing around the forums to find some kind of FAQ about this, and I know the answers are out there, I just can't seem to find them.

I am having trouble transferring files between two computers.

Router: WRT54GS with tomato firmware
- All wires rated CAT5E
- Computer 1 running latest version of vista
- Computer 2 running latest version of windows 2000
- Router and both network adapters set to auto negotiate

What is the average speed of a file transfer between networks? What is the realistic peak?

I am getting 1.3 to 2.1 MB/s I'm guessing that is pretty bad.

Someone either kindly direct me to the guide that deals with this question

You should realistically average around 10mb transfer.

this leaves me wondering, what is holding me back?
What are the possibilities ?

Just off the top of my head:

1. Check to make sure both computers are connected at 100Mbps and not 10Mbps.
2. On the Vista computer, trying the following:

Start>>Control Panel>>Programs and Features

Click on ‘Turn windows features on or off’ on the left side of the screen

Unchecked ‘Remote Differential Compression’

3. Check your firewall settings and also try soft resetting the router.

also on the vista computer, go to the network device and turn off IPV6 support. some people had great success with this.

you should not be using the router part of the router to communicate between the two pc's. the traffic will just be switched using the switch part of the router. since this is 99% of the time unmanaged in your router, meaning that you cannot make config changes here, you have no control over what happens in the switch and also that if you had a brand new one of the same type, you could simply turn it on and you will be able to transfer files without issue.

firstly, you havnt said how you are copying files. what protocol you are using.
you havnt said what sort of specs your machines are.
what is the ping time between the machines?
are your nic settings on both machines set to auto?
