whats better
1700mhz(162x10.5) with memory at 162
or
1785mhz(170x10.5) with memory at 128
.... looks like i am eventualy going to need to get some pc2400
EDIT: just for the mods i ment what would crunch seti faster or i would have put this in the amd section of the forums
EDIT AGAIN: doh just made a correction on the first i ment 162x10.5 not 160x10.5 lol sorry tc u got to it b4 i noticed
If I'm following you correctly you're saying 1785MHz cpu with ram running at 128, versus 1680MHz cpu and 160 on the ram? I'd say that 105MHz cpu difference would out weigh the ram difference, but the best way to tell is benchmark it. If the difference in cpu speed was 50 or less the faster ram might come into play. Of course ultimately you want both going as fast as they can handle.
TC would what u had to say still be the same since my correction...
Well of course I can't predict exactly, but my guess is the 85MHz cpu difference still wins with the slower ram. Like I said my general rule of thumb is once you have a choice of 50MHz or less in cpu speed versus faster ram timings, it probably pays to go with the faster ram and lose the cpu speed. Anything more than 50MHz in cpu speed would probably make up for slower ram relatively speaking. Every case is a little different though. My suggestion would be to benchmark both configurations with our OC benchmark file and submit your results while you're at it :)
yeah i just really didnt want to stop crunching right now because of the race we are in
I wouldn't worry about it too much then - either way you're probably talking about less than 10 minutes difference on average.
yeah... i think i will work on unlocking my xp soon.... so i wouldent need to have my fsb quite as high but also i will get some pc1400 so i can set my fsb to 166 that should make the best of both worlds
Here's my story. First my Duron ran 1053mhz, 117X9 with memory at 117mhz (fsb). I reconfigured it to 1050mhz, 105X10 with memory at 140mhz (fsb+pci). With almost identical total clock rates I found that the faster memory rate more than made up for the lower bus rate. I lowered my fast SETI wu times from roughly 7:40 to roughly 7:20. Hope that's helpful.
