AMD is slated to launch the Radeon HD 4890 card based on the RV790 core in April not the rumored Radeon HD 4970. The RV790XT A11 sample is running at 850Mhz core at 1.3V and 975Mhz GDDR5 memory. In comparision, a Radeon HD 4870 (RV770) card runs at 750MHz core and 900MHz GDDR5 memory.
AMD told their partners that RV790 is expected to be around 20% faster than the current Radeon HD 4870 RV770 card and will compete headon against the GeForce 285 GTX card:beer:
The pricing? Between US$199 to US$249.

Only thing is, if u bought a $400 GTX285 , go kick yourself because it's going to depreciate to $250 in 3 months.

I doubt it but is this the 40 nm shrink? With clocks like that and some bad reference cooler designs it will be toaster.

I like the price! and the fact that it is a single card/single pcb setup. I suppose this will lead to a significant drop in video card prices about release time?

Seems like ATI beats the crap out of nvidia with pricing, all their new cards are $100 lower at launch than their nvidia counterparts. I guess nvidia still doesnt get the picture that they can no longer over charge for their cards because theyve actually got strong competition.

It's just that some people don't care about performance/$ and are willing to pay a premium for the best.
$200 for a 20% increase over a 4870 is pretty good. However Its unlikely the cards will be that rumored price when it comes out and will most likely be between $250 - $300 as retailers always gouge when something first comes out.

It will probably settle lower but first of all I would put it not much below the GTX285, then slowly drop. If this isn't 40nm, then this would have a short lifespan of ~ 2 months I guess, that is why the price is so low.?

where did you find the info for the pricing or is that you just guessing? i would speculate that it would be closer to $300.

Someone in nvidia forums said the GTX285 was going to drop in price to $299, so probably at the same time as this release.

I certainly hope so. I've started saving for a new rig as I found out I can barely play GTA4 on low as my cpu is really slowing me down. And if the single chip one is competing with the GTX285 just imagine the performance with an X2 version

That's GTX 285, not 295.
The 285 and the 280 (released last June) perform the exact same, clock for clock. The only difference is the die shrink, resulting is slightly higher factory clocks, and about 10 watts less power consumption clock for clock. I'd be surprised if a 'high-end' AMD GPU released almost a year later couldn't beat it :)

You need a quad to run GTA IV better, not a fast GPU. GTA IV is very cpu intensive.

GTA 4 is just plain badly coded - i've stopped playing it now

It is very cpu intensive alright. Also corrected my earlier post :)
I wonder if it will be released on April 1st...

Probably wont be on time. Both Nvidia and ATI delayed their launches back in june/july 2009.
The link in the OP has an update:
Update: We have just been informed by CJ that there will be 2 versions of the Radeon HD4890 - a standard edition and a OC edition. The standard edition will launch in mid April, with the OC Edition following shortly after by end of April.
The Radeon HD 4890 OC Edition has 1GB of GDDR5 memory onboard and is expected to perform 25-30% faster than HD 4870. It is expected to be priced at USD299 at launch.
