I want to get a gtx 285 so bad but 400 bucks is pushing it for me at the moment. Do you think they'll start dropping the price over the course of the next 6 months or so? Or do we have to wait til the 300 series?

I say wait until Q2, when the 40nm gpu's will come out. GTX285 will certainly drop by a lot, or significantly and by then you might want the newer cards.

considering what is your definition of word "soon"
but yes in 6 months they will surely drop in price ,
i quote this from another site if you have't saw/read it yet
Soon, the recommended retail prices for the GeForce GTX 285 and GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 will be lowered from $399 to $299, and from $299 to $199, respectively. This will stimulate demand , strengthen the competitiveness of NVIDIA products , and also it will eliminate the internal competition between GeForce GTX 285 and GeForce GTX 295. Now for additional payment in 25% it is possible to obtain the two-chip video card which cost $499, In this case the last card will be as minimum one and half times faster than the GeForce GTX 285.

We note that in German retail, for example, the GeForce GTX 295 fell in price to the level Of Radeon HD 4870 X2, although there are no official plans with respect to change in its recommended price ($499) .

In this month AMD company already reduced the recommended retail cost for the Radeon HD 4870 X2 to $449, and some American stores propose this video card for price $399. NVIDIA possesses higher performance, but the price Of GeForce GTX 295 also can be lowered under the effect of general market behavior.

You can already get the 285 for ~$330, and you can find used 280's for ~$250-300.

There was a 260 for $180 just the other day on Newegg.
