i had someone help me install my first time and didn't really pay that much attention to what they were doing.
i have a ibm deskstar 75gxp hard drive and im pretty sure its failing. rather than use ghost, i think i just want to start from scratch with a fresh 120gxp and pull off what i want from the other hd once i get the new one up and running.

edit: this will be a 80 gig drive going in.

i have a asus a7m motherboard and am wondering how to go from start to finish? also how to get the most performance and stability.

thanks a lot in advance.

I would remove the original hard drive, then install, format and partition the new drive.

Then install in this order;
1- operating system
2- VIA drivers (if applicable)
3- service packs for operating system (again, if applicable)
4- sound card drivers, especially with a Sound Blaster card
5- Video card drivers
6- NIC drivers
7- any remaining drivers
8- any apps that you will need to read the files that you are going to import from the original drive, MS Office etc, Adobe etc.

Once the O-S is in and set up, the hardware and apps are all loaded, install the original hard drive as the slave to the new hard drive. Boot into windows go to the old hard drive and copy any files that you want to migrate to the new drive. When you've gotten everything off the original drive, reformat it and use it as additional storage or keep for a spare.

Others may have another procedure to do this, but this method has always worked for me.

Don't forget to set the jumpers to the appropriate positions, master or slave.

Good Luck!
