I've got an old raptor (WD740) 74.3gig drive, and a brand new 500gig 16mb cache 7200rpm drive.

When I did the windows vista performance eval. it gave me a score of 5.7 with the Raptor being the reason (data transfer rate: 5.7)

Just wondering if this 4 year old raptor really is slower than this brand new 500gig caviar.

The raptor will likely trail the WD740 in STR(sustained transfer) but beat it significantly in access times and IOPs(multitasking). I'd rather have the raptor as my OS drive...regardless of what WEI says.

I think I agree.

The brute force speed of the Raptors make up for a lot of shortcomings the tech has progressed. Newer drives have more condensed platters and more cache. Focusing on an OS drive the Raptor will win.
