when overclocking with rivatuner, it gives me three profile to overclock. standard 2d, low power 3d, and performance 3d. I overclocked my 8600m GS on the performance 3d profile, but my card sometimes does not go above low power 3d mode, whether I'm playing a game or folding.

Is there a way to force my card into performance 3d mode?

edit: I found an option in rivatuner to always run my card at a certain performance level, but that really isn't an option. this being a laptop, I need it to downclock to 2D when it's on battery power so that my battery lasts longer than 20 minutes. what I really need to find is why my drivers don't think that folding is intensive enough to warrant performance mode...

Sounds like you need your settings to allow the gpu to get it's speed settings (if possible), directly from the application. So when you're folding or playing a game like FAR CRY, Halo, etc., it will run full speed. And when you pause or quit the game, it should decrease it's speed.
