View Full Version : GPU question
Are these driver numbers and modded file info still needed for GPU folding?
1. Download 177.35 + modded INF file INTO A FOLDER from THIS SITE:
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/...p?showforum=94
Choose your Version (XP x86 x64, Vista x86 x64) then download the driver. After the driver 177.35 is done, download the modded inf with it.
2. Drag and Drop modded INF file "nv_disp" into the folder that contains 177.35.

The following is paraphrased from a post by ChasR. I hope he doesn't mind.
Driver 178.08 is probably the best for GPU-only folding (max PPD).
Drivers 180.60 and 181.22 are probably the best for SMP/GPU folding.
The latest official CUDA drivers are 180.60, and the latest WHQL driver is 181.22. These drivers are about 3% slower than 178.08, but they allow the card to fold using very little CPU resources. The 3% hit is more than made up for by increased performance from the SMP client running on the same machine.
modded .inf file isn't right either and hasn't been since the official release of 177.35. It was only needed for 177.35 beta and earlier. Using that file may cause some folks grief.
If you're going to edit the sticky, the recommendation should be to use the latest official CUDA driver. I don't think it's prudent to recommend old drivers for a few % ppd boost. With the cores changing regularly, it's possible to get code that doesn't work well with the older drivers. Do not use any beta drivers PERIOD. If you experience any difficulties with audio/video playback or lag of any sort with the Official CUDA drivers, install the latest WHQL dirver.
Thanks, I was thinking, "oh ****", as soon as I saw it was written by nitteo, since he's been gone for awhile now.
I'm a total noob at this GPU folding. Might we lean on your expertise to re-do it, ChasR?
This link, if you think it relevant, would be my best input:

Nitteo is still available if you need him Adak...I am sure he would do a quick edit.
I added the edit under the sticky.
