So I had a 4 day weekend so I decided to replay some of my favorites and try some new games out because I haven't gamed in a while.
I played the following games:

Carmageddon 2 and then 3
Titan Quest
Heroes of Might and Magic 3
Deus Ex
Secret of the Monkey Island 2

None of them really made me have fun =/ It was just too boring to play by myself, even on classics like Monkey Island I couldn't help thinking "Eh, could be spending my time better..."

I enjoyed Titan Quest for a bit, made 2 characters but it has been ****ing me off because I keep finding good items for character A while playing Character B and vice versa.

After MMO's, playing single player just isnt that fun, especially ones that involve grinding lol. What depresses me even further is that there's no good MMO's in sight, and WoW is old.

What I thought would be a great gaming weekend turned out pretty boring.

Gotta open up a bit. Took me some time to recover after wow. Now I have tons of things I play, and watch shows/movies, and read books. Takes time.

lol I read books and watch shows/movies too, I'm talking about games though. I wasn't a WoW addict, it was just a really awesome game and not many games keep up. They need to make co-op rpgs or something =/ Killing numerous repetitive monsters by yourself is no fun anymore.

Listen the important thing is you've kicked the WoW habit.

If you kicked it before looking like this

I nevered like MMO's but I also never liked single player games once I played my first online game. THe fallout series are the only single player games I enjoyed.

I don't play games on my own anymore really. I just like getting some games in with friends through TS or Skype. Makes any game a lot of fun...new or old.

I got into Guild Wars, but after a while I decided to just go back to FPS's because MMO's are too dangerous. I played WoW for a few hours, but then also realized that it was dangerous and didn't want to get sucked in. So now, I play the occasional real time strategy or shooter, but I mostly just stick to books and movies nowadays :) It's truly amazing how a game can cause you to forgot how much reality can suck at times. It becomes an addictive realm of limitless enjoyment, which of course, does not exist in real life :)

Isn't Titan Quest a co-op RPG?

I think co-op is making a comeback, which is good news. Check out info on Borderlands, it's a hybrid FPS/RPG/co-op kind of game that sounds pretty interesting.

You might be missing the social environment side of things.

With an MMO, even if you are playing solo, it's often for things that apply to a social environment.

Games tend to be a lot more fun when they are shared experience and/or competitive experience.

I remember a long time ago when Final Fantasy III was brand new...it was great and fun to play alone. Although, for a while I had some friends, we just sat in a room and played through it together - took turns driving basically. It was awesome; way better than playing alone.

So...advice... Play games with some kind of multiplayer when possible. There are obvious FPS's and RTS's and such. Another that could be good is getting into Neverwinter Nights or something like that where you can roleplay with other people and such - potentially very good. Another option is to game with friends if possible - even single player games. Some single player games lend themselves very well to co-playing with interesting characters, settings, and storylines. For example, a couple of the Oddworld games would be real good for that. The last thing is if you are playing by yourself, try to get into games that have fast moving plot lines and such OR are mentally challenging. Grinding away at repetitive tasks in order to get leet stats or whatever in a single player game will probably never work well for you again.

I've been playing a lot of Left 4 Dead in the two weeks I've been off WoW, it delivers a similar sort of experience as raiding or dungeon crawling (or pvp if you play versus).

I stopped playing guild wars and started playing LFS, a excellent racing sim. I quickly became a dev for a 'cruising' mod that turned the game into an RPG hah. Stopped playing that after 2 years and started playing FPS games again, 4 years of MMORPGs and online RPGs. I definitely understand where your coming from. Other games just don't seem the same for a little while. I finally stopped playing both games after getting completely burnt out on them, over Christmas I was playing about 8-10 hours a day non-stop and now I don't want to touch either again.

Took me a while to crack the habit of MMO's, but I did it for about 2 years. Still gaming is wierd without it for me. Kinda a love hate relationship ;)

Hmm. You know, I wish WoW was single player. Create a party and go beat on some stuff like a classical RPG. "Other players" is the only thing I don't like about that game.

I don't really have a problem breaking my wow habits. I ground to 60, raided up to AQ40, then was like ... boring. Took a break, enjoyed life. Came back, leveled to 70. Boring again, got back to life. Came back again, got into raiding on my druid for a change, went through most of sunwell and again got bored, but came back in time for lich king. Got to 80 and disappointingly downed everything in the first week of organized guild raiding, and this last time dropped off the radar when we were getting close to downing 3 drake sarth. My guildies get ****ed off at me, but by now they should be used to it, I make a habit of just flat out not logging in anymore once we reach the end of progression.

Then again, when there are bosses to down I pretty much log in every single night for several hours + farm stuff on the weekends. So maybe I am hooked, but I manage to burn myself out from overindulgence every few weeks/months.

Non-mmos are a superior experience imo. I've played wow, Eve, etc because of being able to tackle big baddies with a bunch of friends(well ok I played Eve cause passive shield tanking level 4s in a drake is fun :D). As far as story action and challenge goes, I still prefer standard single/multiplayer games.

Dragon Age Origins is being produced by BioWare and is going to be a single player RPG. PC Gamer preview got me very interested in it.

Hmm Bioware? Where have I heard that name before? Did they do.. Was it Baldur's Gate 2? Or .. Hmm, they have a good rep for something, I just forget what.

edit: Ugh, was it KOTR and Jade Empire? Blech.

Black Isle, who did Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale became Bioware.

bleh? Granted Jade Empire was pretty much kotor with an ancient fantasy theme applied to it, but Kotor was a great rpg. On the xbox, it was one of the first GOOD western, console rpgs. Not to mention, it took an existing franchise and managed to build an amazing game that would have stood on it's own even if it wasn't based on Star Wars.

Bioware makes some really high quality stuff. Baldur's Gate, NWN, Mass Effect, all top notch games. Even Shattered Steel was a fun mech game way back in the day.

bioware doesn't have a good rep for "something", they have good rep for virtually every title they've ever made. I can think of maybe one or 2 games which don't have a big following or didn't receive critical acclaim. I can't wait for Dragon Age.

btw Shard, Black Isle is not Bioware. Bioware has been around for a few years before black isle existed. The only connection they have is that some of their games were based off of Bioware technologies or IPs. After the studio was shut down they made Obsidian, which again is a company which makes a lot of games based off of Bioware stuff.

Oh that's just silly. It's easy to play wow and still have a normal life. I was going to do my paper over the weekend but I played wow instead. So I told myself I would go to the library on Monday and get some work done and so I went there on Monday and today and I got a lot done. All it takes is some time management. If all you do is play it nonstop then you aren't addicted you're just stupid.

I feel like the only one who quit wow after playing for 4 years and was easily able to go back and do other things.

get co-op games. Co-op is where the real fun is at. All the fun of mmos(playing with friends) and the fun of single player games(story lines you can impact).

For me when I play WoW I dont have the time for any other games. So then when I quit there is always a huuuge stack of games to play. but its always the multiplayer games that attract me, single player it takes an exceptional game to keep me playing

for me I look for some kind of economic game to sink my teeth into. I deactivated my WoW account and am considering just deleting my characters altogether.
I was leveling a toon got to the point where Stranglethorn Fever was a red quest for me. Teamed up with a few people and started getting gorilla teeth. Turns out you only need 1 tooth now and instead of 6 waves in increasing difficulty they made it 3 waves of 1 mob each. I said screw this, the game no longer is any fun. And deactivated my account. The entire game has become about the race to end game which, is pathetic as it was. PvP used to be my saving grace but that has just simply vanished in a heart beat. As far as I am concerned my WoW days are over there is absolutely nothing that pulls me back to it

It's the simple progression of gaming.

Single-player
Multi-player
MMO
Real Life

IMO, once you start liking multiplayer, you generally don't regress to liking single-player. When you play MMO, you can get burned out, so there's actually a high chance of regressing to liking multi-player. However, you also waste so much time MMOing that when you finally burn out, it hits you really bad (did I really play that game 40 hours this week?!), so you also have a chance to progress into doing something productive (I could've learned to code C++ in 4 weeks @ 40 hrs/week!! What was I thinking?).

My advice? Find a FUN hobby that will actually give you some benefit over time (stamina, skills, exposure). It's a good replacement for gaming :).

I like the changes they made to leveling. I takes a long time to get to 80 which is where the real game begins. It would take far too long if didn't speed it up like they have. I like leveling especially when you get to Northrend, but the best part is when you get to level 80.
