Here's the link to the article. Its very small, mainly pics... Though the temps were decresed by about 5C° using this method the CPU was 100% safe from core cracking in the future

Looks like a great idea especially if you are taking the heatsink on and off alot. Not cracking a core would be something I would love to live with.

IMHO, it's past time for AMD to put heat spreaders on top of their processors. The CPU size is soo small and the slugs are soo fragile. Get to it, Jerry!

I'd gladly pay an extra $4 for the added peace of mind!

Could it be the copper shim helping the temps out to? I have heard a lot of controvercy about shims so I'm not shure what to think. I always thought it would be a good idea to remove the heat from the core and the ceramic base. The extra clamping force seems like an added benefit but wouldnt make a difference with my water setup due to the mounting system. Any thoughts on shims? If I can find a nice thin copper spreader I might give this a try. A thin piece of silver would be even nicer. Mayby I can scrap a sliver coin and try it.

Well I never really believed in shims. I was talking with Bart Lane over at 1coolPC & he totally believes in shims. He had reports of customers getting better temps & higher overclocks BUT with so many variables I just can't bring myself to agree with the benifit of shims. An old Chrome Orb for a waterblock right? Well to be honest I think shims are evil but some think its the best in the world.

Well I'm not using the water orb on my main rig I'm using a Maze2. I still havn't had a chance to do anything with the water orb accept leak test it. I'll try to find a way to mount it but its tough to do anything with a broken shoulder. I think I'll try the sim and cap idea sometime. I move my computer around a lot so its probably a good idea. Whats the purpose of a good cpu if you kill the core.

what do you all think was on top of the k6 series???????

lol just what i was thinking of saying.... and with the k6 series some people would take the heat spreader off anyway to get better temps and higher overclocks

The K6 series was a little different since it had bad thermal goop and the aluminum plate wasn't all that flat. I'm seriously thinking about doing this mod to my cpu if I can find some copper to use as the top cap.

LOOKS LIKE A VERY GOOD IDEA just wish i had to balls to do it :D
