I'll be buying a Hanns·G HG-281DPB Black 28" monitor soon, and I'm sure that my fanless Gigabyte 8600GT will not be able to handle the 1920 x 1200 native resolution in a gaming enviroment (UT2003).

My 6600 is overclocked at 3.4 ghz, have 2 gb of memory in my Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3.

My problem- limited funds, looking to keep the upgrade under $150.

I also want to stay with a Nvidia card (non-SLI).

So, would a 9800 GT/GTX/GTX+ be sutible?

Recommendations?

Thanks -

Currently $119.99 after MIR -

It'll work just fine. You won't be able to max out Crysis, but for that you'd need to drop a few grand anyways. You should be able to run most games at med-high settings at that rez w/ 2xAA. I've been running at 1920x1200 (same monitor) on my 4850 w/o issues, but just got a GTX 280 yesterday...haven't had a chance to try it yet.

You could also spring for a bit more and get the MSI GTX 260 that's going for $180 AR...look in the Cyber Deals section if you're interested.

Ok, thanks for the recommendation Jason- I'll look into it.

Is it just me... or is the heat sink and fan on that PNY the wrong way round...?

Whoa!

That is weird.

Edit: At first I thought it was just a bad photoshoot where they had to super-glue the HS on at the last second, but reading some of the NewEgg reviews it looks like it's just poorly engineered.

Yeah, I read about that in the reviews at Newegg- seems that way.

Well, just so you know that fan blows air and it's supposed to be the other way(through the little slots/holes there). which means it'll be blowing hot air inside your computer and not outside like it's supposed to be.

PS: If you play UT 2003 or GOTY, the card you have can handle it, I'm 82% sure. But anyways get the 9800 GTX+, you will love it.

^^ What Douken said.. I also like Jason's suggestion for the GTX260, the extra video memory will help out with some of the more intensive games. If you can afford a little extra, go with a 260.

I think I will be avoiding the PNy card as I don't like the HSF screwup.

But this card from EVGA looks good for a bit more -

I have the I-INC 28" (i think its the same thing as yours just a different name), and I am planning to use a evga gtx 285. Just got it yesterday, haven't ran it yet on the new system since I am waiting on parts.

Think I'll just keep an eye on the 260s & GTX+ cards for 10 days or so -

that second heatsink is a little better... how can PNY screw up that bad? surely someone would have noticed that....

I am still researching.

The 9800GX2 isn't as refined for SLI much. If you check out reviews, some games don't even function with the 9800GX2 or totally unplayable frame rates compared to even a single 9800GT card. Just a word of warning with that. GTX260 would be the ideal route to go.

I use to run 8800GT at 1920x1200 with crysis even so a 9800GTX+ should run just don't expect godly results in some newer titles, since memory is what will be really limiting it.

I ended up buying an Asus VW266H Black 25.5" LCD Monitor from Newegg -

It really is a great monitor. Is your Eee driving that bad boy?

I just got an Eee 1000H for $250 in the classifieds and I'm very happy with it.

The prices on those 1920x1200 monitors is getting very resonable. I just saw the B&M Staples stores selling a 24" Dell for 3 bills and change last Sunday. I think I'll have to go look at some today :D

I'd still rather have a (all IP-S LCD) 30" panel with two vertical 20" panel on either side.

No, the Eee isn't driving it, just there 'cause it's also new.

hi'
sorry, I have to say a word ...
after searching for benchs and results, it appears that the gtx260 is not the one which can beat the 9800gx2!
beside, if you play some heavy games, this gtx260 will show limits quite fast (friend's review!)
the only bad side of this 9800gx2, is the problem with filters, when a game needs some extras ...difficult to go over AA4xx.

so, for me and some friends the one to get would be the gtx285, no less!

I have to say that to push a 28" on games you need some video ram and power ;)
anyway, for me, I"ll wait another round, some say that the gtx300 will come out soon...

Hes trying to keep it cheap hence why I said the suggestion of a GTX260. Price be the limiting point and at that price point right now depending... the GTX260 or the ATI 4850/4870 is about the only one in that price range. I'd say the GTX260 for quietness of the cooler, or if you don't mind a loud reference cooler the 4850 is a good card and can hold its own for cheaper but be warned they get hot.

At such a res though having AA on is a benefit not a necessity.

Staple's has an Acer 24" WS monitor for $225.

I don't know how good it is but the next time I'm over there I'll try and have the sales guy display some of my high-res photos and maybe a DVD movie I'll bring.

I don't say this just to validate my choice ...
when I got this card, there were nothing better on the market ;)
the 4870x2 or the gtx260 were not out yet, so I choose the one I guessed that could push this 28" I have.

and since, I have no regret, it might not be the best of the moment, but still performing ok.
I can play grid quite at max, and Dirt as well, just as a gtx260 would do,
and that's why I'm not going to upgrade before the g300 serie is out ;)
and I never had any compatibility issue with it.

well, that's it ... no claiming about anything, just satisfied with this card.
I just found that this gtx260 is not the one I would get ;)
a gtx285, yes! just as you have ;)

24 inches for $225? Either monitor prices or quality has dropped to the floor! I paid $350 for my 2007WFP and it's only a 20 incher!
