I am going to try to build a case from Legos. Do I need to do anything special to the mobo, like raise it off the base of the lego case in some way? I will post pics when it is done!

you'll need to mount some standoffs for the mobo mounting, should be real easy though, just get some standoffs from your existing case or buy some from a good electronics parts store. you'll also need drive mounting stuff as well. I'm not so sure it will work well without a chassis ground of some sort though. there's someone out there with a lego case and pics, but if i remember right, i think he used the inside chassis of a regular case and mobo tray, just built the legos around that.

Well, I have worked on it for about 2 hours now. My hands are almost bleeding! Right now I am taking time out to watch the eagles game. If anyone has any legos they want to contribute to this project, please PM me and let me know.

you should glue these together or something to make them more stable....... tthat would be cool.
maybe u should start over :)
Rezman5

I will not start over. It took like 1.5 hours just to get the outline done with specific measurements taken from my Lain-Li case. I am thinking of just using the removable motherboard tray in the Lego case. If I would get a bunch of those window things...you might be on to something. Anyway, PM me for donating legos. I am 15 and still have my legos from when I was a kid, but almost used all of them already. I might coat the whole thing in some kind of clear glue...and sell it in the classifieds or something.

Unfortunately I donated all my Legos, and Lego "Briefcase" carrier, to GoodWill about 4 years ago.
I do remember there was an alternative to Legos back when I was a kid, called Connectix? Something along those lines. You connected the pieces together via a little cube piece with connectors on each face of the cube. Now there is a real challenge in making a PC :)
What are you going to use to hold the PSU up? That sucker is a little heavy for non-glued Legos.

very cool you are 15 and using your mind.
and they say all young kids do are drugs these days :)
I saw one lego case a long time ago that had both the AMD logo and the Asus logo lego-ed into the side. That was real cool! You could do something like that w/ your case!

I would make an AMD sign out of legos, but don't have the right colors nor do I have enough legos to work with. I havn't gotten any PMs for anyone wanting to send me legos. Any ideas on a clear glue I can use? Any help (parts or ideas) would be appreciated!

sounds like an aswsome case! Make sure to post pictures.
I would think a typical hot glue gun would work fine as an adheasive.

Well, to cut down on the use and need of legos, I am going to Home Depot to get some plexiclass, so the side and top will have windows. I think this case will look pretty good when it is done. Also, I am going to use the legos with holes in them as a fan grill.

hey u could mount some of those lil figurine lego sets on top or something.
very neat idea!
so what are the specs of your pc gonna be?

I am going to build my bro a computer and put it inside. For now I will be using an old Pentium II 300Mhz in there. Then when he gets money, he will get himself a proper computer...one with AMD inside!
Jeff Bolton
01-20-02, 10:32 AM
when you are done you should try to paint it so you can still tell it is legos but it doesn't look so haphazard with all the different color. who knows?

find a garage sale or two, or 50, they have legos in them all the time, I should know, my mom sold my set of like 10000 or something, we built a small fort with them when i was a kid, took a month to put together! lol, and she sold them for 25bucks! must've been 200 bucks worth of legos!

Dude i just had that idea of building a lego case. I was thinking if I ever do get a new mobo I would have parts for 2 computers, and the idea of a lego case came into my head. It was either a lego case or just slightly modding my compaq deskpro 486 case. I had a whole bunch of legos, but I think I threw them out. Hey that's gonna be a cool case. If I do get a new mobo I still might go for that. Either that or just try to find a weird case. Accually I have an "old school" sterio I was looking at putting a comp in.
Anyone ever thought about making a case that supported 2 full computers? Would be kind of weird :D

my neighbor and I did this very recently. He bought one of those big craftsman tool chests from sears (stands about three and a half feet high, two feet wide, and a foot deep), with a few drawers and a bottom compartment. We installed two motherboards onto the base of the lower compartment, and hung all the drives from a metal bar above them. The chest is big enough so that two monitors can sit side by side on top of it. We're gonna send some pictures to virtual-hideout soon, I'll post a link if anyone cares to see it.
sweet! post away! i'd love to see them... perhaps start a new thread so other peple can see "2 computers - 1 case" :D

In the past the Lego company has been very supportive of modelers and sculpters. I have heard of people contacting the company and explaining what they wanted to build. Lego sold them what ever they wanted for the sculpture at a discounted rate. I have also heard that sometimes they will buy Lego sculptures.

...Sorry dude. I'll look around in the garage, but I think I cleaned out all of them. It was really hard letting them go.

Aww man, i got tons of legos, they're somewhere in the basement stored away!! And that alternative lego thing was called Construx, but they weren't real popular if i remember right...
Of course, everyone knows that Knex are the best!! :p
I built a fully working wrist-crossbow out of Knex just about a month ago, shoots paper clips bent at 90deg angles really accurate to about 125 feet. Wonder if it's still in my closet...

OK, I have most of the front built. I just am waiting for more legos I ordered from Ebay. I will also need to get some plexi glass for a top and side window! This is going to be the best case ever!
JFettig
01-27-02, 09:03 PM
awesome, thats a great idea! make it out of k-nex and cover it with plexi!!!! your smart! well lol that didnt eaven come from you but i got that idea from you! hehehe thats really cool!

if your having trouble holding the psu up or the drives you could try duplos(big legos) for even smaller kids. They are much bigger than normal legos.
Rezman5
01-28-02, 12:13 PM
I took out an old mobo holder and some 5.25" and 3.5" from an old computer to put on the inside so I can screw the drives in. I have them resting on legos. The hardest will be shaping the back to fit the mobo!

Cypher720
01-29-02, 05:28 PM
if you paint it, then whats the point of using legos????? it is a crazy case, and is realllllly ugly. its got so many different colors, it is eye-catching. i am good friends with Rezman5, and it is a cool case.

reading this post has inspipired me. I made my own lego case and it is fully functional. heres the specs on what i have in it.
Mobo: Biostar MV7KS (i think...) micro atx
Proc: AMD Duron 1.0ghz
HDD: Maxtor 13gig
No-name DVD drive
PS: Sun micro atx
and it's running on top of my mac g3 tower using the mac monitor... now thats a weird sight... windows xp on a mac monitor. I used only legos, no spare parts from a case or anything. there is no power button, so i have to restart then pull the plug during bios check so it will start up when i plug it back in. I'm currently working on a top that comes off when you press a button(Lego Mindstorms). Gotta add the L.E.Ds.I have a little window, but you can't see anything in it. I have some extra red L.E.Ds and might make a case light out of them. I'll try and post some pics tonight. I have the mobo raised on 4 lego blocks at the corner and have had no problems. The DVD drive is mounted under the mobo and there is a fan under the mobo to keep the back cool(so the legos don't melt :) ) i got some major mods still to com, but it look pretty good so far. i need all black blocks... time to call lego!
I am 15 as well. I made subwoofer box out of legos. I wish I had a camera so you could see it. It's hysterical because it has got all the colors of the rainbow scattered in no particular order. Are you using 2x*, or 1x*?
here is a finished case... its actually just a lego shell but still looks cool: http://people.netscape.com/toms/cubicle/computer/

I did this a year ago!!!! Back when I thought I couldn't afford a case...
I thought it was just WAYYYY too weird to tell anyone about AND I even used technic pieces in the right spots in order to mount the Floppy, HDD, CD-ROM, and Motherboard.
I never did figure out a secure way to holding in expansion cars short of scalping a motherboard tray...
I might make a second version if someone dared me...
The first case had a hinged door and the finished product weighed 20 pounds!
Now I'm working on a 10 x 15 x 7 inch Teeny-Tower made out of Polycarbonate Plastic.

You need to get a Lego RCX, they are $150 (ouch). They are small microcomputers with onboard memory, analog inputs/outputs, an infared sensor, and is programmaable in VB. You could use it to monitor temps or control lights, it uses 9V-12V power.

What if get those lil lego people and make them look like there working on your computer?? That would be soo awsome, you could get those itty bitty tools that fit in their hands.
Have them scattered around the inside in front of your window.
