I got a fantom 500gb usb drive(model:GF500EU), hooked up to my computer via usb(no esata) I started a full format yesterday, waited 7 hours and it was only at 33%, I tried to cancel it and it wouldn't cancel so I had to flip the power switch off. I checked event viewer to see why it wouldn't cancel for me, and it showed this "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk3\DR3 during a paging operation."

I then did a quick format and that worked, I transferred a couple gigs worth of videos to the drive and they were only moving at 10mb/sec. I then tried another full format and watched the percentage and noticed it does about 4% every hour, so at that rate(which it was still moving at for several hours) it would take 19 hours to format.

The drive is in a aluminum enclosure, it gets really hot, it feels like maybe its overheating because I can't even put my hand on it for too long till my skin hurts

You should run disk diagnostic software on it.
Long format checks for bad sectors, so perhaps you have bad sectors on that drive.
Quick format just wipes out the file table, doesn't actually check for bad sectors.
